Inauguration of the renovated Sardar Patel Sports Complex at Kawkaba Municipality on 11 July 2020

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan attended the inauguration ceremony of the renovated Sardar Patel Sports Complex in Kawkaba Municipality on 11 July 2020.

 

The renovation of Sardar Patel Sports Complex in Kawkaba Municipality, which is within the area of operation of the Indian Battalion at the UNIFIL in South Lebanon, is one of the three Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) of Government of India approved last year. The other two QIPs i.e. provision of a generator set for Burguz village and renovation of Mahatma Gandhi Park in Ebl Al Saqi Municipality have already been completed.

The Sports Complex was originally dedicated to the people in the year 2001. The current project work included upgradation work & the basic infrastructural development, including construction of additional Basketball Facility, installation of Safety Nets & lights along with re-painting and rehabilitation of the Complex etc. Ambassador also donated sets of sports equipment for the use in the Sports Complex.

The Ceremony was attended by Sector East Commander of the UNIFIL Brigadier General Marcos Llago Navarro, Mayor of Kawakaba, Dr Elli Nakhoul, Commanding Officer Indian Battalion, Col Narayan Singh Bhati, Sector East Civil Affairs, senior officers of the Lebanese Armed Forces and other local dignitaries.

 

In his speech the Mayor Kawakba thanked the Govt. of India for this help and fondly recalled principles of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. He also praised the Indian Battalion for their professionalism and for their connect with the local people by way of various activities they carry out like medical camps, IT classes etc.

 

During the visit, Ambassador also visited the Indian Battalion, interacted with the Kazak troops who are working under the Indian Command in the UNIFIL, and laid a wreath at the martyrs memorial at the Indian battalion.
