Signing of MoU between Embassy of India and Shouf Biosphere Reserve

Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan, Ambassador of India to Lebanon signed an MOU with President of Shouf Cedar Reserve Mr. Charles Noujim for supporting 2 important eco projects at the Reserve. The projects, funded by Government of India, envisaged under this cooperation include construction and furnishing of a reception cabin at Mrusti entrance of the Reserve and supporting reforestation of one hectare area within the Reserve by planting 800 cedar trees.  The MOU was signed at the Reserve under the shadow of majestic Cedar trees. Her Excellency, Madam Noura Jumblatt, Mr. Nasser Zaidan, Mayor of Mresti, Mr. Nizar Hani, Senior official of the Reserve and other local dignitaries were present.

These projects coming during the celebrations of India@75, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, mark a new beginning of cooperation between Embassy of India and the Biosphere Reserve.


Shouf Biosphere Reserve is the largest reserve in Lebanon covering almost 5% of total land area and is home to legendary Cedar trees of Lebanon. These projects will increase tourism to the Reserve and will help in the ecological conservation of the Reserve.  “Cedar trees have lives of thousands of years. As long as these 800 Cedars stand tall, they will bear testimony to the strong India- Lebanon friendship for next thousands of years”, Ambassador Dr Khan said in his speech.  Dr Khan also offered the Reserve administration and local municipality to benefit from various training programmes under ITEC (India Technical and Economic Cooperation) programme of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
