About:

 

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of it’s people, culture and achievements.

 

This Mahotsav is dedicated to the people of India who have not only been instrumental in bringing India thus far in it’s evolutionary journey but also hold within them the power and potential to enable Prime Minister Modi’s vision of activating India 2.0, fuelled by the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

 

Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav is an embodiment of all that is progressive about India’s socio-cultural, political and economic identity. The official journey of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” commences on 12th March, 2021 which starts a 75 week countdown to our 75th anniversary of Independence and will end post a year on 15th August, 2023.

Embassy of India has undertaken various activities under India[at]75-Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The details of the events are as follows:

 

March, 2021:

 

Curtain Raiser event of celebration of India[at]75 Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav

On 19 March, 2021, the Embassy of India, Beirut organized the Curtain Raiser event of celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, India[at]75. The event, which was organized virtually, given the local Covid-19 situation, was attended by a number of Indian community members. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan addressed the Indian community and conveyed Hon’ble Prime Minister’s message on how the #AmritMahotsav will be celebrated across India and globally. He highlighted various themes of these celebrations and underlined that the Indian community is an important stakeholder in these celebrations. He invited the Indian community to wholeheartedly participate and also generate ideas on how to make these celebrations more participatory and also appealing for the local Lebanese communities. Ambassador also spoke about India’s global standing, vaccine maitri initiative and India’s priorities as member of the UN Security Council. Ambassador also spoke about India-Lebanon relationship and gave an overview about a number of projects undertaken by the Embassy in past 1 year to help the local communities. Ambassador also spoke about the exemplary services rendered by the Indian soldiers as part of the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) in South Lebanon. Dr. Digamber Patra, Professor, American University of Beirut and Ms. Preeti Bhatia, Teacher in American Community School spoke on various aspects of India’s achievements in 75 years after Independence. Dr. Patra spoke at length about Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan while Ms. Bhatia spoke about her life as an expatriate and how to leverage culture to build bridges with local communities.

April 2021:

 

Signing of MoU between Embassy of India, Beirut and Shouf Biosphere Reserve: On 16 April, 2021, Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan, Ambassador of India to Lebanon signed an MOU with President of Shouf Cedar Reserve Mr. Charles Noujim for supporting 2 important eco projects at the Reserve. The projects, funded by Government of India, envisaged under this cooperation include construction and furnishing of a reception cabin at Mrusti entrance of the Reserve and supporting reforestation of one hectare area within the Reserve by planting 800 cedar trees.  The MOU was signed at the Reserve under the shadow of majestic Cedar trees. Her Excellency, Madam Noura Jumblatt, Mr. Nasser Zaidan, Mayor of Mresti, Mr. Nizar Hani, Senior official of the Reserve and other local dignitaries were present. These projects coming during the celebrations of India@75, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, mark a new beginning of cooperation between Embassy of India and the Biosphere Reserve.

Shouf Biosphere Reserve is the largest reserve in Lebanon covering almost 5% of total land area and is home to legendary Cedar trees of Lebanon. These projects will increase tourism to the Reserve and will help in the ecological conservation of the Reserve.  “Cedar trees have lives of thousands of years. As long as these 800 Cedars stand tall, they will bear testimony to the strong India- Lebanon friendship for next thousands of years”, Ambassador said in his speech.  Dr Khan also offered the Reserve administration and local municipality to benefit from various training programmes under ITEC (India Technical and Economic Cooperation) programme of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.

Indian Cultural Show and Exhibition by Indian Battalion at UNIFIL:  and As part of India@75 celebrations, “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”, the Indian Battalion at UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) organised a cultural show and exhibition on May 24, 2021. Exhibition on India-Lebanon Bilateral Relations: As part of India@75 celebrations, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan inaugurated an Exhibition on May 31, 2021 on the activities of the Embassy at the Elite Centre in Tripoli. Ambassador interacted with faculty and guests of the Elite Centre. Ambassador also presented a plaque of appreciation to Director of the Elite Centre Ms. Imane Kamali Dernaika for promoting India-Lebanon friendship.

June 2021:

 

Conference on Bilateral Trade and Investment: Embassy of India, Beirut, in association with TPCI, organized a Virtual Conference on Bilateral Trade and Investment Opportunities between India and Lebanon on June 4, 2021. The Conference was also supported by the Lebanese Embassy in New Delhi. Deputy Chief of Lebanese Embassy in New Delhi, senior TPCI officials and representatives of various Trade Bodies/Chambers in Lebanon attended the Conference. The three most important chambers in Lebanon i.e. Beirut, Tripoli and Saida chambers were represented. The Conference was addressed by the Ambassador. Ambassador spoke on the need to enhance interactions between trade bodies of India and Lebanon, exchange of delegations, sharing of database of traders of potential exporters-importers & publication of standards for imports in Lebanon. Ambassador particularly underlined that there exists untapped potential to enhance bilateral trade in the sectors like food and agriculture, pharmaceuticals, machinery etc.

 

Inauguration of Red Cross Building, Govt of India project: On June 6, Ambassador accompanied by HOC, Shri Jagjit Singh visited South Lebanon and inaugurated the newly constructed, GoI funded, Red Cross Building at Chebba municipality in the area of operation of Indian Battalion in UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon). The Quick Impact Project (QIP) was completed in March, 2021. The inauguration was organized by the UNIFIL and local municipality jointly. The event was attended by Mr. Mohd Saab, Mayor of Chebaa & Head of Al Arqoub Union, Brigadier General Javier Mur Lalaguna, Commander Sector East UNIFIL, Mr. Kasim Hashim, Member of Parliament of the local area, Sheikh Ismail Dalli, Judge of local area, Col Mohver Singh Grewal, Sena Medal, Commander Indian Battalion, representative from Lebanese Armed Forces, Senior Red Cross officials and a number of local dignitaries.

 

Celebrations of IDY 2021:

 

Curtain Raiser event on IDY: A special yoga session under the theme “Yoga for Wellness” was organised at the Embassy on June 14 in association with Art of Living, Lebanon. The session focused on boosting immunity and respiratory health in fight against Covid-19/other respiratory illnesses and was led by Lebanese Yoga instructor Dana Shamseddin.

 

Celebration of International Day of Yoga: Embassy organized IDY 2021 main event at prominent Sanayeh Park in Beirut on June 20. Yoga as per Common Yoga Protocol was conducted by the instructors from Art of Living and Isha Foundation. Also, other yoga schools in Lebanon participated in the event. In light of Covid-19, the participation was restricted to invitees only. Chief of Protocol of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Dr. Abeer Ali representing Her Excellency Ms. Zeina Akar, Vice President of Council of Ministers, Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants and Mr. Mohamad Itani, representing HE Mr. Hani Chemaitelly, Secretary General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants and Mr. Haytham Sayad, Adviser, representing HE Judge Marwan Aboud, Governor of Beirut attended the event. The event was attended by approximately 100 persons.

Celebration of International Day of Yoga by Indian Battalion in UNIFIL: Ambassador attended the celebration of IDY organized by Indian Battalion in UNIFIL in South Lebanon on June 21. The event was attended by a large number of local yoga enthusiasts. Also, fellow peacekeeping contingents from Spain, Cambodia, Indonesia, Serbia, Kazakhstan, etc. participated in the event.

 

Celebration of International Day of Yoga by Elite Center: Elite Center of Culture & Education, Tripoli organized a Yoga Session in association with the Embassy, Tripoli Municipality, Tripoli Touristic Association, Isha Foundation and Art of Living on June 27. This was the 4th event organised by the Embassy this year as part of IDY. This is the first time when Yoga Day was celebrated in Tripoli, the 2nd most populous city in Lebanon. The event was inaugurated by the Ambassador, head of Tripoli Municipality, Dr. Riad Yamak and President of Elite Center, Dr. Imane Kamali. Head of Tripoli Touristic Association, Dr. Mounzer Kabbara also graced the event. The event was attended by a large number of Lebanese yoga enthusiasts.

 

Signing of MoU between FIEO and Association of Shouf Industrialists: Embassy facilitated signing of an MoU between FIEO & ASI (Association of Shouf Industrialists), Lebanon on June 24 in presence of Ambassador, DG & CEO FIEO, Dr. Ajay Sahai and President ASI, Mr Nabil Ghossaini. They also exchanged views for expanding/diversifying bilateral trade.

 

July, 2021:

Tourism Promotion: As part of India@75, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and in line with State promotion activities, the Embassy of India, Beirut organised a tourism event “Incredible India – Your favourite Touristic Destination” focusing on States of Madhya Pradesh & Rajasthan on July 16, 2021 in hybrid mode with the participation of State Tourism Promotion Board of Madhya Pradesh, State Tourism Promotion Board of Rajasthan, Association and Travel and Tourism Agents in Lebanon (ATTAL) and with the support of India Tourism Office Dubai. Ambassador made welcome remarks and gave an overview of touristic landscape of India. On behalf of the Tourism Promotion Board of Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary Tourism, Government of Madhya Pradesh gave opening remarks. Later, the team from Tourism Promotion Board of Madhya Pradesh made a detailed presentation. The Tourism Board of Rajasthan, represented by Ms. Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary Tourism, Government of Rajasthan showcased the state of vibrant folk dance and music, gigantic forts and palaces, spicy food, colourful and large turbans, extensive golden sand desert, camels and rich handicraft. The event was attended by Mr. Antoin Assi, Director, Ministry of Tourism of Lebanon, Mr. Jean Abboud, President of Association and Travel and Tourism Agents in Lebanon (ATTAL) and Ms. Myriam Shouman, Member of Association for Development of Lebanese Indian Relations (ADLIR) and by several tour operators based in Lebanon. The event was widely covered by the local media including in India.

 

Business Meet and Gala Dinner under the theme “India@75: An Incredible Growth Story” on August 6, 2021

As part of ongoing activities related to Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and on the occasion of upcoming 75th Independence Day of India, Embassy of India organized a Business Meet and Gala Dinner under the theme “India@75: An Incredible Growth Story”. The Meet was attended by representative of various Chambers of Commerce and other top businessmen from Beirut, Saida, Bekka, Choufeiat and Mount Lebanon. Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan in his remarks spoke about India’s incredible growth story, strong fundamentals of Indian economy and various measures taken by Government of India during past 6 years to make India a favorite destination for investments and doing business. Ambassador also spoke about post -covid economic recovery in India and informed that India is already emerging fast from the Covid related slow down and is on the path to be again one of the fastest growing economies in the World. He also spoke about Indian economy reaching 5 trillion-dollar mark in next few years. Ambassador invited Lebanese businessmen to expand their business ties with India and look at “Import Substitution” by moving their source markets for their import needs to India. He said India could be source of large number of import requirements in Lebanon particularly in Engineering Goods, Food and Allied products and Drugs and Pharmaceuticals. He said Indian products are not only World class but also very cost-efficient which will bring down import bill of Lebanon. He also recognized successful business presence in India of the Lebanese companies, Future Pipes, Dar Al Hindasa and Khatib wa Alamy.

 

Flag Hoisting on Independence Day 2021

75th Independence Day was celebrated with utmost joy, enthusiasm and pride at the premises of Embassy of India, Beirut on 15 August, 2021. On account of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in light of various guidelines issued by the local authorities, the physical participation in the Flag Hoisting Ceremony on the occasion of 75th Independence Day of India was limited. This was however first time the Indian Community could participate in the Flag Hoisting ceremony at the Embassy, in-person, after January 26, 2020. About 50 members of the Indian community attended the ceremony. The undersigned hoisted the national flag on the occasion. After unfurling of the National Flag, Hon’ble President’s Address to the Nation was read. 2. On the eve of the Independence Day, Embassy building was lit up in Tricolour. Indian Battalion at UNIFIL also lit up various icons at its base in Tricolor on the occasion. 3. Prominent Lebanese Pianist, Ghida Knio recorded a rendition of National Anthem on the occasion which was posted on the Social Media accounts of the Mission.

 

Seminar on the theme, "India@75: A Glorious History of People, Culture & Achievements"

As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Embassy of India, Beirut organized a Seminar on the theme, "India@75: A Glorious History of People, Culture & Achievements" on the evening of August 15, 2021. Guest Speakers (i) Dr. Digambar Patra, a prominent member of Indian Diaspora and Professor at American University of Beirut (AUB) (ii) Prof. Bassam Lahoud, Professor at Lebanese American University (LAU) and ICCR-sponsored Fellowship Professor in 2017 and (iii) Ms. Lynn Tabet, Friend of India, spoke on the occasion about achievements of India in 75 years of its Independence and about their experience in India, Indian culture, cuisine, languages and diversity of India. Ms. Amal Mansour, Advisor to Minister of Culture, a number of local dignitaries & members of Diaspora attended the event. Ambassador also felicitated all the Speakers with Shield of Appreciation. Ms Sara Chreim, the First Winner of Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz 2020-21 was also honoured with Gold Medal and a Certificate of participation. The Seminar was followed by a reception.

 

National Day Reception to commemorate 75th Independence Day of India on August 20, 2021

Embassy of India, Beirut organized National Day Reception to commemorate 75th Independence Day of India on August 20, 2021.

 

Embassy of India, Beirut organized National Day Reception to commemorate 75th Independence Day of India. The reception was part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, the mega festival which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi 12th March this year from Sabarmati Ashram in the state of Gujarat in India. It was on this day, 12th March in 1930 and at the same place, Sabarmati Ashram, that Mahatma Gandhi, the leading light of our freedom movement, started Civil Disobedience Movement against the British Rule. This mega festival of India’s independence celebrates India’s Freedom Struggle as well as 4 other pillars, what Prime Minister Modi has said i.e. Ideas @75, Actions@75, Achievements @ 75 and Resolves @75.

 

A number of local dignitaries attended the event. Prominent among the attendees were, H.E. Ali Oserian, Member of Parliament and part of Lebanese- India Parliamentary Friendship Committee, Mr Salam Al Ashkar, Acting Chief of Protocol in the Foreign Office who was representing both H.E. Zeina Akkar Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants and Secretary General of Foreign Office H.E. Hani Chemaittelly, Mr. Haythem Sayad, who was representing Governor of Beirut, Brigadier General Ghassan Abboud who was representing Commander of LAF, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon H.E. Joanna Wronecka, Commander of UNIFIL Gen Stephano Del Col, and Head of World Bank Mr Saroj Jha. A number of Ambassadors and representative of UN bodies also attended the event.

 

Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan welcomed the guests and spoke about importance of the occasion. He underlined that India is the largest democracy in the World and that in last 75 years, Indian democracy has not only survived but also thrived and became stronger and stronger. He also said that the Indian democracy is deeply rooted in India’s age-old value system based on ideals of Satyamev Jayte, i.e., truth always prevails, Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam, i.e., the World is one family and on the principles of Unity in Diversity and Non-Violence. He also added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now given the motto of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas i.e. together for everyone’s development. Ambassador also spoke about India’s march towards becoming a 5 trillion-dollar economy in next few years with guiding principle of Atamanirbhar Bharat i.e., Self- Reliant India. He also highlighted a how India was able to make a spectacular recovery from the Covid-related slump and is already on the path of being one of the fastest growing economies in the current financial year. He also recalled how India has been a leading country providing medicine and vaccines to the World in fight against Covid-19. Ambassador Khan also spoke about India’s priorities of its membership of the UN Security Council as encapsulated in the 5- S approach i.e Samman meaning Respect, Samvad meaning Dialogue, Sahyog meaning Cooperation, Shanti meaning Peace and Samriddhi meaning Prosperity for all.

 

Ambassador termed India -Lebanon relations as cordial and spoke about the contribution of Indian battalion in the UNIFIL. He also said that India stood by Lebanon in its hour of need when it provided relief material after the tragic Beirut blasts last year and provided PPEs to the Ministry of Health in its fight against Covid-19 pandemic. He urged various ministries and government departments in Lebanon to benefit from ITEC training programmes and also urged youth to benefit from various scholarships and opportunities to study in India.

 

Mr. Haytham Sayad conveyed a message from the Governor of Beirut on the occasion congratulating India for the 75th Independence Day and also highlighting excellent bilateral relations between India and Lebanon.

The Embassy organized a Seminar,"India@75: Unity in Diversity & a Thriving Democracy" on Aug 23, 2021 at Tripoli. Guest speakers included Dr Imane Kamali, President Elite Center, Bahaa Harb, President Order of Engineers,Tripoli & Prof. Rami Abboud, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Balamand University.

 

 

Webinar on the theme “Modern Teaching Techniques and Methodology” on the occasion of Teacher’s Day on 6 Sept, 2021.

On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, Embassy of India, Beirut, organized a webinar on the theme “Modern Teaching Techniques and Methodology” with participation of Indian and Lebanese teachers in different institutions in Lebanon on September 6, 2021 at 3:30 PM. Cd’A a.i., Shri Sandeep Grover and other officers from the Embassy participated in the event. Guest speakers included (i) Dr. Imane Kamali, Director of Elite Center for Culture and Education, Tripoli (ii) Prof. Bassam Lahoud, Senior Instructor, School of Architecture, Lebanese American University (LAU), (iii) Dr. Digamber Patra, Professor at American University of Beirut (AUB), (iv) Ms. Preeti Bhatia, Teacher in American Community School (ACS). Ms. Rima Saab, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture, Head of Fine Arts Department of Lebanese University (LU) sent a video message on the occasion which was screened in the webinar. Apart from these speakers, many Lebanese students attended the event virtually from Elite Center, Tripoli.

 

 

2. Cd’A a.i., Shri Sandeep Grover made the welcoming remarks and spoke on the occasion. Cd’A stated that teachers inspire us in many ways to do well and succeed in life by giving us a purpose eventually making us a good citizen of the world. Among other things, Cd’A stated that technology has helped a great deal during ongoing Covid pandemic where students and teachers have moved to online classes and not attending the schools in person. This has encouraged everyone to explore more into ways to impart education through audio-visual means. Cd’A stated that Schools, Universities and colleges are around the world are collaborating to design and invent newer techniques to impart education. In order to promote and develop new ideas, the exchange of students and teachers among different schools, universities and colleges of the world play a major role.

 

 

3. In her speech, Dr. Imane Kamali presented an adequate and comprehensive study on the newly adopted teaching techniques and methods, which are all activity-based and centre the learners, involving them entirely into the process of learning. She also proposed, based on a study undertaken by Professor Randi A. Engle from the University of Pittsburgh and Professor Faith R. Conant from the university of Cambridge, a four-principled model for fostering productive disciplinary engagement in a community of learners Classroom. Dr. Kamali added that during the past two years, we have witnessed a transformation in learning, which occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, as learning changed from face-to-face learning to virtual learning, in addition to the corresponding transformation in the use of technology, media, designs, models and assessments used in distance learning. She concluded that education is the need of the hour and as all fields of life have changed, education has also witnessed, due to the introduction of technology along with innovative teaching ways, a drastic revolution.

 

 

4. Prof. Bassam Lahoud, Senior Instructor, School of Architecture, Lebanese American University (LAU) shared his experience in India, Indian culture, cuisine, languages and diversity of India while he was ICCR-sponsored Fellowship Professor in 2017 in Kolkata.

 

 

5. Dr. Digamber Patra, Professor at American University of Beirut (AUB) spoke about modern education techniques and methodologies that have changed with technology and social structure. Dr. Patra stated that among new tools, online teaching, youtube, clickers, Moodle, Power points, Simulation, etc. are widely being used in modern instructing medium. Dr. Patra stated that traditional teaching was largely one way where instructor was giving information and theories, however, modern teaching methods encourage multiple ways of participation, where students argue, debate and study in different prospective. Dr. Patra stated that liberal education is one of the key techniques in modern college and university education where understanding philosophy of humanism, social order and scientific rationality are emphasised in a cross-discipline approach. Dr. Patra stated that modern teaching techniques give enough scope for innovation, research, creative writing, ethics, developing special skills, etc where student can explore cross discipline and easily switch over to another track that he/she finds more interesting and joyful, similarly, possibilities of various interactive learning such as group learning, project-based learning, cooperative learning, collaborative learning, research-based learning, gamification etc. make modern teaching more skilful and ethically enriching.

 

 

6. Ms. Preeti Bhatia, Teacher in American Community School (ACS) along with her colleague, Ms. Madhumita, teacher in ACS showed a presentation in the webinar which included Reggio Emilia Philosophy - a research based early childhood education approach. Among other things, she also spoke about Rabindranath’s Philosophy.

 

ITEC Day on September 23, 2021

The Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated ITEC day in Beirut on September 23, 2021 at the Haigazian University campus.

ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation) is a major developmental assistance programme for capacity building offered by the Ministry of External Affairs, India to a large number of friendly countries across the World and is being offered to Lebanon for a long time. A large number of Government officials and defence personnel from Lebanon have benefited from the training programmes offered under ITEC.

Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan in his speech highlighted the importance of the event and stated that ITEC is a major pillar of the bilateral relations. He urged various ministries and government departments to make use of the training slots made available under ITEC . He also said that depending upon the local requirements the training programmes can also be tailor-made.

Members of Parliament and members of the Lebanese Indian Parliamentary Friendship Committee, H.E. Mr. Ali Osseiran and H.E. Mr. Anwar El Khalil graced the event. The event was also attended by Mr. Dany Gadaoun, Director General, Ministry of Industry, Mr. Amine Thebian, acting Director General Ministry of Tourism and members of ADLIR (Association of Development of Lebanese -Indian Relation). H.E. Anwar Khalil and Mr Dany Gadaoun also shared their thoughts with the audience.

Over 70 ITEC alumni participated in the event and shared their memories about their visit to India and their training experiences.

Celebration of 152th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at UNIFIL on October 3, 2021

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan paid tributes to #MahatmaGandhi at UNIFIL.

Head of Mission/Force Commander of UNIFIL, Amb Khan & Chief of INDBATT Col Mohver Singh Grewal led the celebration of the International Day of Non-Violence at the Mahatma Gandhi Park at Ebl Al Saki in South Lebanon.

To Spread the message of peace & non-violence, doves and balloons were released during the event.

The Event was organized by the Indian Battalion. It was also attended by Mr Samih El Bekai,Mayor of Ebel El Saqi, officials of Lebanese Army & other local dignitaries. Ambassador also presented copies of Autobiography of #MahatmaGandhi to the attendees.


 

 

Celebration of International Day of Non-Violence on October 5, 2021

The Embassy of India, Lebanon, with the cooperation of Association for the Development of Lebanese-Indian Relations, ADLIR celebrated the International Day of Non-Violence on October 5.

 

The International Day of Non-Violence falls every year on October 2, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, after the UN General Assembly unanimously approved this commemoration in June 2007.

 

Her Excellency Ambassador Joanna Wronecka, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon was the keynote speaker for the event. Other speakers included Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan, Ambassador of India to Lebanon, Her Excellency Dr Manal Abdel Samad, Former Minister, Mr. Melhem Khalaf, Head of Beirut Bar Association, Mr. Haitham Sayyad, Advisor and the Representative of Governor of Beirut Judge Marwan Abboud and Ms. Maryam Schuman, representing ADLIR.

 

Other dignitaries who attended the event included, Her Excellency Ambassador Caroline Ziade, Director International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representative of His Excellency Dr Abdallah Bou Habib, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Major General Stefano del Col, Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL, Ambassadors of Srilanka, Bangladesh and Turkey and representatives of various embassies, International organisations, Lebanese civil society and Indian diaspora.

 

The speakers recalled the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi of Truth and Non-Violence and underlined its continued relevance in today’s World.

 

An announcement was also made on behalf of the Governor of Beirut that a public space in Beirut will soon be named after Mahatma Gandhi.

 

The event was shifted to the Embassy premises from the previously planned venue at the Lebanese American University due to an electric fault at the University Campus.

 

Business Seminar in Zahle on October 13, 2021

The Embassy of India and the CCIAZ (Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture of Zahle & Bekka) organized a Business Seminar on October 13, 2021 in Zahle. Discussions on exploring new business opportunities and identifying common grounds to enhance trade between India and Lebanon took place. The Seminar was addressed by Amb Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, Vice President of the Chamber Mr. Mounir Teeny & senior office bearer, Mr. Tony Tohmeh. The event was attended by many top businessmen representing the sectors like food, machinery, renewable energy, wood, textile etc.

 

Vigilance Week on October 26-November 01, 2021

Vigilance Awareness Week is being observed from Oct 26-Nov 01, 2021 with the theme "Independent India @ 75: Self Reliance with Integrity". Embassy staff took the Vigilance Pledge today. Ambassador Dr. Khan also emphasized the importance of transparency, honesty & accountability in public life. Two posters spreading awareness regarding provision of complaints under Public Interest Disclosure and Protection of Informers (PIDPI) have been displayed in Consular Section of the Mission. Embassy staff members also took online e-pledge available for citizens on website www.cvc.gov.in.

 

Business Seminar at Aley on October 28, 2021

The Embassy organized a Business Seminar in Aley on the theme, “Exploring Business Opportunities, Diversifying Business” in association with Aley Commercial Association. In-depth discussions took place on exploring new areas of business between India & Lebanon during the Seminar. Association President Mr Samir Shehayeb & Vice President Eng Ghassan Saab shared useful insights and ideas. Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan gave an overview of the Indian economy & ease of doing business. He also listed the sectors where there is scope of enhancing Indian exports to Lebanon. Businessmen from machinery/food/solar energy/construction/ textile & chemicals sectors attended the Seminar.

 

Nation’s Day Festival on October 29, 2021

The Embassy participated in the Nation's Day Festival organized in Beirut Downtown. Many embassies participated in this cultural / food festival. The Embassy set up a stall displaying tourist material on India and also displayed items recently received from TRIFED. Popular Indian snacks were also offered. A large number of locals visited Indian stall. They were also informed about the re-starting of tourist visas in India and were encouraged to visit India.

Ayurveda Food Festival on November 2, 2021

As part of the Special Week celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Embassy organized an Ayurveda Food Festival on November 2, 2021. A sumptuous and healthy authentic 5-course Indian vegetarian meal based on the principles of Ayurveda was served. Several dignitaries attended the event. H.E. Joanna Wronecka, UN Special Representative for Lebanon, H.E. Abeer Ali Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassadors of Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia and Serbia, Head of UNRWA, senior diplomats from the Embassies of Tunisia, USA, Algeria, Russia etc. attended the event in addition to prominent members of the Lebanese civil society.

 

Cultural Evening at Tripoli on November 3, 2021

A cultural evening was celebrated at Elite Centre, Tripoli with Director General at the Ministry of Culture Dr Ali Al Samad as the Chief Guest.

Part of the Cultural evening was a Seminar on "Exploring Civilizational Linkages & Cultural Similarities between India & Lebanon ".

 

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, in his speech, spoke about historical linkages, multicultural societies, democratic traditions, food, music, languages, yoga etc. He also spoke about connections between Rabindranath Tagore & famous Lebanese poet Khalil Jibran. He also mentioned about various cultural activities being organized by the Embassy, specially those in connection with the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

 

Ms Imane Kamali of Elite Center spoke about friendship & love between India and Lebanon. Dr Ali Samad spoke about Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals of truth and non - violence. He also spoke about readiness of the Ministry of Culture to collaborate with the Embassy in undertaking various cultural activities.

 

Another attraction of the evening was the live painting made by famous Tripoli Painter Omran Yassin on India - Lebanon Friendship Theme. He started as the event started & completed it with the event. He presented the Painting to Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan as what he said, a mark of love from Tripoli.

 

Ambassador also distributed certificates to the participants, from the Elite Centre, in the online course on Gandhian Philosophy conducted in October by Dr Shobana Radhkrishna.

 

The event was attended by a number of local dignitaries, lawyers, university professors and young students.

 

Re Majeur Music School Tripoli presented Indian and Lebanese tunes on Keyboard. The Centre was decorated with Indian textiles and handicrafts. Indian and Lebanese food was served.

 

 

Business Seminar at Tripoli on November 4, 2021

As part of ongoing activities related to Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and in an effort to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation, the Embassy of India organised a Business Seminar in Tripoli, the Economic Capital of Lebanon, on November 04, 2021 in association with CCIAT (Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture of Tripoli and North Lebanon). Tripoli is the second largest city in Lebanon and is a very important economic hub.

More than 30 participants attended the Seminar.

 

The Seminar was co- haired by Chamber President Mr. Toufic Dabbousi and Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan. Mr. Dabbousi provided insights and ideas about Tripoli that is poised to play a major role in the region. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan in his presentation, highlighted the incredible growth of India, Indian economy and the measures taken by the Government under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister to make India a favourite destination for investment and conducting business. Ambassador spoke on how India has risen in the ranking for "Doing Business" over the past few years and highlighted India's march towards a US$ 5 trillion economy. He spoke about post-COVID economic recovery in India.

 

On the bilateral trade potential, Ambassador spoke about exploring new areas of cooperation. He spoke about sectors such as Gems and Jewellery, Pharma, Food and Engineering Goods, Solar Panels, Textiles and Machinery sectors. Ambassador emphasized that increasing imports from India would be beneficial for Lebanon in this hour of crisis as Indian products are more cost-effective and will bring down their overall import bill. Ambassador also welcomed Lebanese exporters to explore Indian market.

 

He encouraged them to participate in the upcoming trade exhibitions in India like Indus Food, Stone Mart etc. Ambassador also informed them that businessmen in India are very keen to expand their business in Lebanon. Ambassador also assured them to provide business visas expeditiously.

 

 

Participation at Cedar plantation drive at Shouf Biosphere Reserve on November 5, 2021

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, HOC Shri Sandeep Grover & the Embassy team participated in the plantation drive at Shouf Biosphere Reserve On November 5, 2021. They were joined by Mr Charles Noujeim, Head of the Board, Mr Faisal Abou Izzeddin, Board member & Mr Nizar Hani, Manager. The Embassy is supporting the afforestation efforts of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve by planting 800 Cedar & other related plant species.

 

Cedars have lives of hundreds of years & as long as they will survive they will bear testimony to love & friendship between India & Lebanon.

Diwali celebration were organised by the Embassy. The event was attended by the Embassy staff, their families and many members of the Indian community.

 

Celebrating the Indian Peacekeepers - Documentary on INDBATT in UNIFIL on November 13, 2021

As part of #AmritMahotsav / India@75 the Embassy brings a short documentary on role, life & routine of Indian Soldiers at the UNIFIL in association with Noursat English and senior anchorwoman Ms Joelle Antoine Aziz. Currently 19 Madras Battalion Group is serving as Indian Battalion at UNIFIL.
On November 13, Noursat English TV crew, along with the Embassy team visited the Indian Battalion HQ and interviewed CO Col Mohver Grewal. The TV Crew also visited nearby Mahatma Gandhi Park and spoke to Mayor of Ebl el Saki who fondly spoke about community connect of the Indian Battalion over past 22 years. The Crew also visited the Medical and Vet clinic run by the Indian Battalion.
The Documentary will be telecasted on Noursat English shortly.

 

Business Outreach Meeting on November 15, 2021


The Embassy organized a Business Outreach Meeting with the Gems & Jewelry importers & producers in Lebanon under the aegis of Syndicate of Jewelers led by its President Mr. Boghos Khurdian. Intense discussions took place on enhancing cooperation and bilateral trade in this sector. Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan gave an overview of the Gems and Jewelry sector from India and spoke about complementarities between India and Lebanon in this sector. Gems & Jewelry is one of largest exports of Lebanon. However, all the raw material, including gold, other precious metals, precious and semi- precious stones are imported. Lebanese producers are now looking at import of materials and also machinery from India in this Sector.

 

Kashi Utsav on November 16-18, 2021

 

As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Kashi Utsav was widely publicized in Lebanon by posting links on Mission’s social media platforms and the Mission’s website. Appropriate hash-tags were used on the postings on the social media. Diaspora was encouraged to engage with various activities by disseminating information among Indian Diaspora through the officer dealing with the community affairs in the Mission. Information and links to the online movies made available by IGNCA on this occasion were also prominent shared on the Mission's social media accounts. As part of one of the themes of Kashi Utsav of promotion of Rajbhasha, Hindi poetry recitation was organized by the Embassy by diaspora children during the Children Evening on November 18 at the Embassy.

 

 

Ek Shaam Bachchon Ke Naam- Children's Evening on November 18, 2021

 

As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Embassy organized a fun-filled & informative evening at the Embassy with the participation of Diaspora & Lebanese children on November 18, 2021. Master Srijan Khawas, Ms. Anika Chandel and Master Ashmit Chandel recited following poems in Hindi: Prakriti Ki Seekh; Bulbul aur Bagula and Sooraj Aaya. Children also enthusiastically participated in a Quiz, Aao Jane Azadi Ke Stambh Prashno Ke Sang and received prizes from Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan. Shri Sandeep Grover, HOC, spoke on the theme of nutrition and growth in Children. Children also enjoyed the Magic show, Bubble show and other fun activities.

 


 

Commonwealth Remembrance Day on November 21, 2021

 

On November 21, Ambassador of India to Lebanon Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, along with Second Secretary Shri Sandeep Grover, joined Commonwealth ambassadors & other dignitaries at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, Beirut to attend the Remembrance Day. Ambassador laid wreath at the memorial and paid respects to the soldiers who lost their lives in the two World Wars. A total of 447 Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the two World Wars are laid to rest in various cemeteries in Lebanon.

 

Constitution Day Celebrations on November 26, 2021

 

Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated the Constitution Day on 26 November 2021 with a number of activities.

 

Reading of the Preamble:

In the morning of November 26, all members of the Embassy, led by Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, read the preamble of the Constitution. Pictures and news of the activity were uploaded on the social media account of the Embassy and also uploaded on the Amrit Mahotsav Website. Indian soldiers at the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL and number of Indian diaspora members also read the the preamble.

 

Online Quiz and Reading of the Preamble:

Two portals developed by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs - Portal for reading Preamble and Portal for Online Quiz on Constitutional Democracy were publicized in the social media platforms of the Embassy for participation by Indian diaspora, members of the Indian contingent in UNFIL and families of India based members of the Mission. Members of the Indian Embassy also read the Preamble of the Constitution online, in their own mother tongues. Certificates of participation were put up on social media accounts of the Embassy. Members of the Indian Embassy also participated in the online quiz.

 

High -level Seminar:

The Embassy of India in Lebanon organized a high-level Seminar on November 26, 2021, on the occasion of Constitution Day of India. Judge Jean Fahed, Former President of the Supreme Court & Former President of the Supreme Judicial Council of Lebanon and eminent lawyer Rima Fawaz Husseini were the main speakers along with Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan. A documentary on the Constitution of India was screened and Second Secretary Mr. Sandeep Grover read the preamble of the Constitution.

Ambassador Dr. Khan, in his speech paid homage to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the Father of the Indian Constitution and remembered all those who contributed to drafting and making of the Indian Constitution. He focused on the working of the Indian Parliament and the election process in India in context of the constitutional provision. He also spoke about judicial independence, independence of the Election Commission of India, robustness of the electoral process in India, separation of powers between various bodies of the state , cooperative federalism and rights and duties of the citizens. Judge Jean Fahed spoke about the Judicial independence in India and the Constitutional provisions which guarantee the Judicial independence. He also spoke about the role of Indian Judiciary as the protectors of citizens' rights, guardian of the Constitution and an instrument of positive interventions for the socio-economic betterment of lives of common man. Lawyer Husseini spoke about the Contribution of Dr Ambedkar in drafting the Constitution. She also highlighted the nation building process in the early years of Freedom of India where more than 500 different princely states were merged to make India a unified and strong entity. She spoke about the importance of free and fair elections in a democracy and complimented the Electoral body in India to carry out the largest electoral exercises in India with full transparency and fairness every time.

Judge Meddy Moutran, Judge of the Court of Cassation (Supreme Court) of Lebanon and Judge Maya Karam also graced the occasion. The event was also attended by prominent members of the Beirut Bar Association, media personnel, members of the Lebanese civil society and Indian Diaspora.

 

India participates in Asia-Oceania Judo Championship on December 5, 2021

 

Indian teams participated in Asia-Oceania Judo Championship, Junior & Cadet levels in Lebanon & won many medals in different categories. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan & Second Secretary Shri Sandeep Grover met with the Indian team & cheered them up. They also watched many matches. Ambassador also met Mr Obaid Al Anzi, Vice President International Judo Federation, Mr. Munawar Anzar frm India, International Judo refree & jury for this championship & other officials. Ambassador congratulated Lebanon for organizing the Championship in these challenging times.

 

Meeting with Energy Minister on December 6, 2021

 

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan met with H.E. Dr. Walid Fayad, Minister of Energy & Water of Lebanon on December 6, 2021. They discussed number of issues of mutual interests.

 

 

Observance of Mahaparinirvana Divas on December 6, 2021

 

As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Embassy of India organised the Mahaparinirvana Divas on December 6 at the Embassy to commemorate the occasion of 65th Death anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. The event commenced with the garlanding of the portrait of Baba Saheb by the Ambassador of India to Lebanon Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan. The Ambassador was joined by Mr. Ram Swarup, an eminent dignitary of the Indian diaspora in Lebanon in paying the floral tributes. It was followed by screening of a documentary named “Mooknayak” based on the life, ideas and ideals of Baba Saheb. Mr. Ram Swarup addressed the gathering where he spoke on the life of Baba Saheb and his contributions to the nation. The Ambassador shared his insights at length on the life and philosophy of Ambedkar and his remarkable contribution in the making of the nation, social reforms in India and the making of the Indian Constitution. Many members of the Gurudwara Committee of Beirut graced the event. The event was also attended by other members of the Indian diaspora.

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan Suhel Ajaz Khan, along with Second Secretary Mr P. Pattabhi visited Jiyeh Thermal Power Plant located in south of Beirut on December 10, 2021. The Plant is operated & managed by a Joint Venture involving Indian firm, OEG, & a local firm Middle East Power (MEP).

 

 

Indian Community in Lebanon observes Mahaparinirvan Diwas on December 12, 2021

 

Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan, along with Second Secretary Shri Sandeep Grover & other staff of the Embassy joined the Indian community at Gurudwara Sant Ravidas Ji in Beirut on December 12, in observance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas in the memory of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav activities.

Ambassador was joined by Gurudwara Prabandhak, Ram Swaroop Ji & others in offering floral tributes & prayers to Dr Ambedkar. A special aarti was performed in the fond memory of Dr Ambedkar.

Ambassador also addressed the Indian community & briefed them about Embassy's services to the Community & activities of the Embassy under Amrit Mahotsav. In his speech Ambassador spoke about ideals of Dr Ambedkar and his contributions in the social reforms in India and his role in drafting the Indian Constitution. Ambassador also encouraged the Indian community to participate in various activities under Amrit Mahotsav.

 

Meeting with Agriculture Minister on December 13, 2021

 

Ambassador Dr Suhel Khan met with Minister of Agriculture, H.E. Dr. Abbas Hajj Hassan on December 13, 2021 . They discussed a number of issues including Lebanon's food security, bringing Indian agriculture technologies to Lebanon, training programmes & enhancing trade in food & agri products.

Ambassador briefed the Minister on the interest in the private sector in Lebanon to enhance food imports from India and to deal directly with the exporters from India without going through intermediaries. Ambassador also informed that India is now the largest food exporter to the Arab countries. Ambassador also informed the Minister that various training programme can be offered to Lebanese officials and scientists under ITEC programme as per their needs.

Ambassador also invited the Minister to send a strong, officially-led business delegation to IndusFood, an important business exhibition in the food and agriculture technology sectors in India to take place in January.

The Minister was very forthcoming in responding to all these suggestions. He termed India as a strong and dependable partner.

 

Webinar and B2B meeting in the Pharma and Healthcare Sectors on December 14, 2021

 

The Embassy team along with the Pharmaceutical importers from Lebanon joined the Webinar and B2B meeting on December 14 with Pharmexcil and Pharmaceutical representatives from India, Zambia & Madagascar on new opportunities in Pharma and Healthcare Sectors.

Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan gave an overview of opportunities for enhancing trade & introducing new products in the Lebanese market. Mr Hisham Fawaz from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health gave a presentation on the registration process for medicine in Lebanon & welcomed Indian Pharmaceutical companies to enhance their presence in Lebanon.

The Lebanese importers voiced their readiness in exploring further business and trade opportunities with their counterparts from India.

 

Screening of Bollywood Movie 'Manikarnika' on December 18, 2021

 

As part of AmritMahotsav, and to commemorate the First War of Independence of 1857, the Embassy organised a special screening of movie Manikarnika, a movie celebrating patriotism & bravery of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi on December 18, 2021.

The Screening saw enthusiastic participation by the Indian community and Lebanese friends of India.Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan welcomed the guests and recalled the important events of 1857. He also thanked Zee Studios who supported the screening of the Movie.

Ambassador also announced that the Embassy will organize monthly Movie Evenings for Bollywood lovers in Lebanon.

 

Meeting with Lebanese Delegation for Indus Food 2022 on December 27, 2021

 

Ambassador Dr Suhel Khan and the Embassy commercial team met on December 27, 2021 with the Lebanese delegation which is going to India for IndusFood 2022 being organized by TPCI. Mr Ahmed Ramdhan from Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture will also be part of the delegation.

 

Embassy celebrated Wishwa Hindi Diwas and Pravasi Bhariyta Diwas on January 10, 2022

 

Wishwa Hindi Diwas/ World Hindi Day was celebrated on January 10 the at Embassy. Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan read out the messages of Hon’ble Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister on this occasion. Video message of Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs was also screened. Ambassador also spoke about the importance of the day and encouraged Indian community to take part in promoting and popularizing Hindi language in Lebanon. Apart from the Indian Diaspora, a number of Lebanese Hindi lovers also participated in the event. Hindi poems were recited by Indians and Lebanese participants. Ambassador also distributed certificates to the participants. A Hindi essay competition was organized by the Embassy on this occasion.

The Embassy also celebrated Pravasi Bharitya Diwas. A Number of Indian community members participated in the event. Ambassador spoke about the importance of the event and encouraged the Indian community to contribute to the growth and development of India, specially with the aim of achieving the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. Ambassador also encouraged the diaspora to whole-heartedly participate in the Amrit Mahotsav activities. Ambassador briefed the audience on the Youth Pravasi Bharitya Diwas celebrated by the Ministry of External Affairs on January 9. Ambassador reiterated the commitment of the Embassy to continuously serving the Indian community in Lebanon.

 

Swachchata Pakhwada on January 01-15, 2022

 

The Embassy observed Swachchata Pakhwada from January 1 to 15. During this, a number of activities were organized including cleanness drive, weeding out of files and clearing the stores, plantation etc.

 

 

Lebanese trade delegation to Indus Food Exhibition on January 08-10, 2022

 

A Lebanese trade delegation consisting of 9 members visited Indus Food Exhibition organized by Trade Promotion Council of India, TPCI in Greater Noida from January 8-10, 2022. The delegation was headed by Mr. Ahmad Ramadan from the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture and consisted of a number of buyers of the food and food processing machinery. The delegation interacted with Indian exporters during B2B session of he Exhibition. Apart from Food, many delegates are also interested in food processing machinery and agriculture technology. The delegation also met with Hon’ble Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, New and Renewable Energy Shri Bhagawanth Khuba, and Hon’ble Member of Parliament Shri S. Muniswamy. The delegation also had detailed discussions with Chairman TPCI Shri Mohit Singla and Senior Director TPCI, Shri Ashok Sethi.

 

 

Celebration of National Youth Day on January 12, 2022

 

The Embassy of India in Beirut celebrated National Youth Day on January 12, 2022 at the Embassy premises. Every year this is day is commemorated on January 12 on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand, a great philosopher, spiritual leader and a youth icon.

On this auspicious occasion the Embassy organized a Table Tennis tournament, inspired by Hon’ble Prime Minister’s initiative of “Fit India Movement”. A number of Indian and Lebanese youth participated in the tournament. Prizes were given for the first, second and third spots in the boys and girls categories. The event was organized in association with prominent local philanthropic organization, Makhzoomi Foundation.

Ambassador also addressed the gathering and shared the ideals and message of Swami Vivekanand. Ambassador also recited the famous speech of Swami Vivekananda which he had given at World's Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893.

Youthful songs were presented by Shri Gopal Das and Shri Ritesh from the Embassy.

Earlier in the day, Ambassador and staff members of the Embassy also attended the inaugural ceremony of the 25th National Youth Festival, virtually, which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister.

Celebration of Makar Sankranti on January 14, 2022

As a part of India@75- Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), the Embassy of India in Beirut celebrated Makar Sankranti Festival on January 14, 2022 at the Embassy premises with full fervour and enthusiasm. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan greeted all members of the Mission on this pious festival. He also participated in making of a colouful Rangoli designed by Ms. Subhi Choudhary and Ms. Nitu Devi. A floral design in the centre with Kites & Kalash were also incorporated in the rangoli reflecting multiple cultural significance of the day across India. All other members of the Embassy also participated in the beautification of the Rangoli. Thereafter, Ambassador distributed Til Ke Laddu among the staff members of the Mission. Three giant Tri-Colour kites and other kites were installed on the rooftop of the Chancery building. Greetings and good wishes were also exchanged among all members of the Mission. Along with the Embassy Staff, the members of their families also participated in the event.

 

750 million Surya Namaskar on January 14, 2022

Indian diaspora, including the Embassy staff, and Lebanese yoga enthusiasts overwhelmingly participated in this initiative. The Embassy shared on its social media various pictures and videos of people participating in this initiative; some of these became extremely popular like Samantha Howick performing Surya Namaskar at Sea, Rita Homsi performing Surya Namaskar in Snow etc. Yoga is very popular in Lebanon and a large number of private Yoga schools are operating in Lebanon. Organizations like Art of Living, Maharishi Yoga, Isha Foundation etc. are also having base in Lebanon.

 

Wreath Laying Ceremony at Commonwealth War Cemetery in Beirut On 74th Indian Army Day on January 15, 2022

Embassy of India, Beirut and the Indian Battalion at UNIFIL organized a wreath laying ceremony at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Beirut on the solemn occasion of 74th Indian Army Day. Ambassador of India, Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan and Commanding Officer of the Indian Battalion in UNIFIL, Col. Mohver Singh Grewal, Sena Medal, led the wreath laying and paid respects to the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the first and second World Wars. Wreaths were also laid by Mr. Salam el Achkar, Deputy Chief of Protocol, representing Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, H.E. Dr. Abdallah Bou Habib, General Elías Youssef representing LAF Commander Gen Josef Aoun, Brig Gen Ramon Armada Vazquez, Sector East Commander UNIFIL, Defence Attaché of German Embassy , Defence Attaché US Embassy and Indian Defence Attache Col S P Rawat. Charge d' Affairs UK Embassy, H.E. Ms Alyson King also paid floral tributes. Other dignitaries who attended the event included, Mr. Haytham Sayad representing Beirut Governor H.E. Judge Marwan Abboud, H.E. Mr Hermano Telles Ribeiro, Ambassador of Brazil, H.E. Mr. Yerzhan Kalekenov, Ambassador of Kazakhstan, H.E. Maj Gen MD Jahangir Al Mustahidur Rahman, Ambassador of Bangladesh, HE Mr Azri Mat Yacob, Ambassador of Malaysia, H.E. Mr. Panayiotis Kyriacou, Ambassador of Cyprus and H.E. Mr Hanna Akar, Ambassador of Antigua and Barbados. Diplomats and Defence Attaches from other embassies like USA, Canada, Germany, Turkey, Egypt , Kazakhstan, Romania and Slovakia also attended the solemn ceremony. Col Surya Pratap Rawat Indian Defence Attaché accredited to Turkey, Lebanon and Syria (resident in Ankara), Mr. Sandeep Grover, Head of Chancery Indian Embassy, other staff members of the Indian Embassy, and officers and soldiers of the 19th Madras Infantry Battalion Group serving as Indian Battalion at UNIFIL also graced the occasion. The event was also attended by Lebanese civil society members, members of ADLIR (Association of Development of Lebanese India Relations), friends of India and Indian diaspora. Mr Joe Karam, Lawyer presented a wreath on behalf of the Lebanese Civil Society. A total of 447 Indian soldiers from the first and second world wars are resting in various cemeteries in Lebanon, including at Beirut, Tripoli and Saida. The event started with all-faith prayers and ended with playing of Last Post by the Indian Battalion Band. The last such ceremony happened in 2018 and the Embassy has revived the tradition from this year. Even though such a ceremony was organized in 2018, this was the first time the ceremony was organized on this scale and the presence of so many senior dignitaries and Diplomatic community was unprecedented. The event has been covered very extensively in local media, including the official news agency, National News Agency (NNA).

 

Run for Peace on January 22, 2022

Embassy of India, Beirut organized ‘Run for Peace’ in association with Indian Battalion deployed at UNIFIL, South Lebanon on 22 January 2022 from 7:30 AM. More than 75 army personnel dressed up in tri-colour participated in 4.00 km (approx.) distance of run. Embassy officials Sh. Gopal Prasad, Attache, Sh. Ritesh Kumar, Attache’ and Sh. Jitendra Singh, SSA participated in the Peace Run. The event was earlier planned for January 25 but had to be preponed due to bad weather predictions. The local population, though keen to participate, could not be involved to due Covid-19 protocols followed by the UNIFIL.

 

Photo Exhibition on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on January 23, 2022:

Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated ‘Parakram Diwas’ in the Embassy Premises on the occasion of Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, a national hero of our freedom struggle movement. On this occasion, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan inaugurated a ‘Photo Exhibition’ of some important photographs of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on January 23, 2022 by lighting mayur lamp. The exhibition remained open for general public till January 26, 2022. A number of members of Indian Diaspora, Lebanese friends and Embassy Staff along with their family members visited the exhibition and enriched their awareness about Netaji’s life. Attendees of the Republic Day Flag Hoisting also visited the exhibition.

 

Illumination of Embassy Buildings on January 23, 2022:

As a part of Republic Day Celebration, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan inaugurated the illumination of both Chancery and Consular Buildings of the Embassy Premises on January 23, 2022 in the evening. Both Chancery and Consular Buildings were illuminated with tri-colour LED piped lights. The illumination remined till the evening of Republic Day.


 

National Tourism Day Seminar on January 25, 2022:

As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and on the occasion of National Tourism Day, the Embassy organised a Seminar “Tourism Wonders of India” on January 25, 2022. The event was also part of the Republic Day Celebrations. The Seminar was focused on the States of Goa and Kerala, the two most favored destinations for the Lebanese tourists in India. The speakers included, Mr. Nikhil Desai, MD, Goa Tourism Development Corporation, Mr. Ahmad El Wazzan, Head of Public Relations Abroad Department, Lebanese Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Jean Abboud, President, Association of Travel & Tourism Agents in Lebanon (ATTAL) and Mr. Aouni Abdel Rahim, Members of Association for Development of Lebanese-Indian Relations (ADLIR). Members of ATTAL, ADLIR and other travel and tour operators attended the event. Promotional videos from Kerala and Goa were screened. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan gave an overview of demography of India, top touristic destinations and talked about tourism industry of India. Ambassador also spoke about the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the tourism sector all over the world but highlighted that Indian tourism is able to make fast recovery from the Covid-19 related slump. Despite the pandemic, India is able to host the international guests following the Covid-19 protocols. Ambassador also spoke on the Free Tourist Visa Scheme of Government of India to first 5 lakh travellers to visit India and said that since the inception of this Scheme, the Embassy has issued many free tourist visa to Lebanese travellers. Mr. Ahmad El Wazzan, Head of Public Relations Abroad Department, Lebanese Ministry of Tourism talked about cooperation between the Tourism ministries of India and Lebanon. He also spoke about impact of Covid-19 on tourism sector and the challenges being faced by tourists. Mr. Jean Abboud, President, ATTAL talked about beauty and diversity of India. He said that India is the most photogenic country. He also added that travelling is essential part of learning and growing. He expressed keen desire to collaborate with tour operators from India to take more Lebanese people to India and to get more Indian people to Lebanon. Mr. Aouni Abdel Rahim, Members of ADLIR spoke fondly about his visit to Kumbh Mela in India few years back and his regular visits to India for the past 37 years. A short film made by him on the Kumbh Mela, with a positive message of “live and let live”, was also screened. All the attendees shown great interest in taking more tour groups to India and to explore new touristic locations.

 

Flag Hoisting Ceremony on 73rd Republic Day on January 26, 2022:

Republic Day, 2022 held at the Embassy Premises on 26 January 2022 in the morning at 09:30 AM with full pride, enthusiasm and joy. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and then unfurled the National Flag and everyone present in the gathering sang the National Anthem. Then, Ambassador read out the Address to the Nation by Hon’ble Rashtrapatiji. On account of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, heavy rains and transportation strike on the day, the physical participation in the Flag Hoisting Ceremony was limited. However about 60 Indian community members, members of the Indian Battalion, Lebanese friends of India and embassy staff with their children and family members participated in the Ceremony. Winners of Hindi Essay Writing Competition held on World Hindi Day were awarded with shields and certificates on this occasion. More than 30 army personnel from Indian Battalion at UNIFIL, Lebanon participated in the Hindi Essay Writing Competition announced separately for Hindi and Non-Hindi speaking categories. The event concluded with the light refreshments served for all visitors. Simultaneous Flag Hoisting was organized by the Indian Battalion at their Headquarters in South Lebanon.

 

Screening of the movie ‘Kesari’ on January 26, 2022:

Embassy of India, Beirut organized screening of famous bollywood movie ‘Kesari’ with Arabic subtitles in the Embassy Premises on 26 January 2022 from 3:00 pm onwards. The movie was screened under the theme of ‘Celebrating Unsung Heroes’ under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) to showcase unmatched bravery and patriotism of 21 Sikhs Indian Soldiers in the battle of Saragarhi in 1897. The screening was attended by Lebanese Friends of India, Members of ADLIR, members of Indian Diaspora and members of the Mission. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan greeted everyone for the Republic Day. He also thanked Dharma Production for granting permission to telecast the movie Kesari, in-house on non-commercial basis.

 

Martyrs Day on January 30, 2022

On the occasion of Martyrs Day, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Khan & the Embassy team paid floral tributes to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi & observed 2 min silence. They remembered sacrifices made by Mahatma Gandhi and numerous others for the freedom of the country. The Embassy also organized a talk on "Satyagraha - The Pathway to Global Peace"-A tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on this solemn occasion, in cooperation with ICCR (Indian Council of Cultural Relations). The talk was given by Dr. Shobhana Radhakrishna, internationally renowned Gandhian speaker, live on Facebook and YouTube Channels of the Embassy.

 

India Global Connect: Seminar on Gems and Jewellery exports on February 4, 2022

 

Embassy of India, Beirut organised a Seminar “India Global Connect” in association with Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India on February 4, 2022, to enhance trade in Gems and Jewellery sector with the focus on the Indian exports to Lebanon in this sector. The event was organized in hybrid mode.

 

Table Tennis Tournament organized by Makhzoumi Foundation in association with Embassy on 8th February 2022

 

Makhzoumi Foundation joined hands with the Embassy in celebrating India@75:AzadiKaAmritMahotsav & organized a Table Tennis tournament . Mrs May Makhzoumi, President of the foundation graced the occasion and inaugurated the tournament with a friendly match with the Ambassador. The event attracted participation from the Lebanese youths. Mrs May Makhzoumi & the foundation Team also gave a tour and overview to the Ambassador of various activities of the foundation like Health clinics, Labs, IT Centre, Vocational training etc.

 

Screening of & "Badrinath Ki Dulhania" at Elite Center of Culture and Education, Tripoli on 18th February 2022

 

Embassy of India, Beirut with the cooperation of Elite Centre of Culture and Education, Tripoli screened the Bollywood Movie ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ on February 18, 2022. This was part of monthly movie screening by the Embassy.  The show was attended by around 50 Lebanese friends of India.  Dr. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Center appreciated Embassy’s efforts to bring Indian Cinema in Lebanon.  Shri Sandeep Grover, Charge d’Affaires a.i. thanked the Elite Center for organising  screening of the movie. In his speech, he also paid tribute to late Lata Mangeshkar.  The show was well appreciated by the audience.

 

Celebration of Ravidas Jayanti at Gurudwara Sant Ravidas in Beirut on 20th February

 

Embassy of India, Beirut joined Gurudwara Sant Ravidas ji in Beirut in celebration of birth anniversary of Sant Ravidas on February 20, 2022. The event was attended by all the members of the Embassy. A large number of Indian Diaspora was present on this special occasion. Shri Ramswaroop, President of Gurudwara Sant Ravidas Prabandhak Committee thanked the Embassy members for joining in the celebration. He addressed the gathering that Embassy was very helpful in pandemic time when a large number of members of Indian Diaspora wanted to go back to India. Shri Sandeep Grover, Charge d’Affairs congratulated everyone on this occasion and thanked the Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee for organising the function. He also said that India is celebrating 75 years of its Independence and encouraged Indian Community to participate in all events of the Embassy.

 

Virtual celebration of Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat Week from 1st March-7th March, 2022

Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat is a flagship initiative which aims to enhance interaction, cultural connect and promote mutual understanding. Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated the Ek Bharat Shrestha Week from 1st March -7th March 2022. The Embassy celebrated the event by sharing information on the social handles, respectively, Twitter and Facebook about the several languages, cuisines, festivals, art and cultural events, tourism from different parts of the country. The following templates were shared on the social media showcasing the unique cultural mosaic of the country. Day 1- One India, One Festival, Many Celebrations – It highlights India’s cultural imprint of celebrating one festival in different parts of the country under different names. Day 2 – Dances of India – India hosts six classical dance forms and several other folk-dance forms from different corners of the country. Day 3 – Languages of India – India is home to the third most spoken languages in the World. Day 4 – Cuisines of India Day 5 – Sarees of India – Saree represents the life, culture and traditions of Indian women. This attire come under different patterns and looks in different parts of the country showcasing its rich diversified indigeneity. Day 6 – Folk Music of India – Dance and Music are part and parcel of Indian culture and India is a home to numerous music forms encompassing the corners of the country. Day 7 – Street Food of India – While few of the street foods have already made their mark in the global picture, India has more lot to offer to the world in terms of street food. During this week-long celebration, the Bhasha Sangam App was also promoted and was well received by the local population. The Embassy also shared the ‘Aaj ka Vakya’ depicting the potential of Handicraft industry in India.

 

Screening of "Hindi Medium" in the Embassy Premises on 18th March 2022

Under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Embassy screened the Bollywood movie “Hindi Medium” as a part of monthly movie screening. The movie show was attended by around 40 people from the Lebanese community. The movie was very well received and enjoyed by the locals. Light refreshments was served in between and after the movie.

 

Celebration of Holika Dahan in the Embassy premises on the evening of 18th March 2022

The Embassy celebrated Holika Dahan in the premises. The celebration was graced by friends from the Lebanese community as well as Indian diaspora. The women staffs did the pooja rituals and then the fire was lit up by the Ambassador. The celebration was marked by playing holi with gulaal. The Event was followed by light refreshments.

 

Seminar on "Women in India and Lebanon" in Tripoli on 29th March 2022

On the occasion of celebration of International Women's Day, Embassy of India organized a seminar on "Women in India and Lebanon" with the cooperation of Elite Center of culture and education, Tripoli on 29th March 2022 in Tripoli. The speakers for the event were Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan, President of the Elite center Dr Imane Kamali, Dr Zahida Jabbour, Professor and Former Secretary of Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, Mrs Nahla Nehme, Former President of the North Educational Sector, Ministry of Education, Lebanon, Mrs Anshu Chibber, Senior Editor, CNN-News18 India and Mr Youssef Eid, an eminent Poet. Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan highlighted on the journey of women from the ancient era to the contemporary times in India. He enlightened on the status of women in the Vedic times, medieval queens and freedom fighters of the modern India. He navigated through the progress of contemporary women in various fields, from increasing numbers in the parliament to representation in the Olympics. He also stressed on the need of equal rights for women for a nation’s development. Ambassador presented shield to Dr Zahida Jabbour and Mrs Nahla Nehme on this auspicious occasion. Ambassador also presented a token of appreciation to Dr Imane Kamali for her endless efforts to strengthen our bilateral cultural ties and dedication for the development of culture and education. He also stressed on the need of equal rights for women for a nation’s development. Ambassador presented shield to Dr Zahida Jabbour and Mrs Nahla Nehme on this auspicious occasion. Ambassador also presented a token of appreciation to Dr Imane Kamali for her endless efforts to strengthen our bilateral cultural ties and dedication for the development of culture and education. The event got wider attention and was very well attended by the local community. The event was followed by light refreshments.

 

Ambassador’s meeting with industry leaders in Zahle on 20th March 2022

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan met with the Industry leaders Mr. Mohd Moallem, President, Syndicate of Craftsmen, Mr. Tony Tohmeh, Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture of Zahle & Bekaa(CCIAZ), and Mr. Ziad Saade, President, Association of Traders during his visit to Zahle. Ambassador discussed the bilateral trade and the various opportunities for enhancing mutual ties in the sectors of arts and crafts, agricultural products, etc. The meeting was attended by numerous other business people who showed interest in fostering bilateral economic relations.

 

Lebanese corner displayed at 35th Surajkund International crafts Mela , March 2022

Lebanon has put up a cultural corner in the 35th Surajkund International Crafts Mela showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Lebanon. The stall comprises handicrafts, brasswares, and other locally developed artifacts. A Lebanese delegation is also paying a visit to the International Crafts Mela. This will further help in boosting the bilateral ties in the art and crafts trade. Ambassador recently met businessmen from the art and crafts trade in Lebanon and discussed the potential of bilateral trade in this sector. Indian artifacts are quite popular in the souvenir shops of Beirut and other tourist spots of Lebanon.

 

Tribute to the martyred Indian soldiers at Tripoli, North Lebanon on 29th March 2022

Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan paid a visit to the Tripoli Naval War cemetery at Tripoli, North Lebanon. Ambassador was accompanied by Second Secretary & HOC Shri Sandeep Grover and Third Secretary Shri Santanu Kumar Singh. Ambassador Dr Khan laid a wreath as a tribute to the martyred Indian soldiers at the Tripoli Naval Cemetery, Tripoli. The war cemetery is a part of the Commonwealth War graves. The war cemetery is a living testimony to the role of Indian soldiers sacrificing their lives fighting for a foreign rule in a foreign land. The war cemetery remembers the twenty Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War 2 in north Lebanon. The visit was an internal event of the Embassy without any public participation. The visit was shared on the social media handle of the Embassy.

 

Business Seminar and Iftaar Dinner on 13th April 2022

A Business Seminar & Iftaar Dinner was organized by the Embassy on April 13, 2022. H.E. Mr. Amin Salam, Minister of Economy & Trade of Lebanon and other senior dignitaries attended the event. Minister Salam expressed his full support to accelerating India-Lebanon economic partnership & added that Lebanon is keen to partner with India to ensure its Food Security. Ambassador gave a detailed insight on the status of Indian economy, bilateral trade between India-Lebanon and the future scope and opportunities.

 

Celebration of Ambedkar Jayanti on 14th April in the Embassy premises

As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Embassy of India organised Birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar on 14 April 2022 at the Embassy premises. The event was graced by Shri Ram Swarup, an eminent member of the Indian diaspora along with other community members. The event commenced with the garlanding of the portrait of Baba Saheb by the Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan. Mr. Ram Swarup joined the Ambassador and paid floral tributes. The event was also attended by all members of the Embassy. On this occasion, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan inaugurated a ‘Photo Exhibition’ of some important photographs of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar by lighting mayur lamp. The exhibition remained open for general public till 19th April 2022.

 

Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations held at Gurudwara in Beirut on April 17, 2022

On the occasion of the Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations on 17th April 2022, Gurudwara Sant RaviDas, Beirut in association with the Embassy organized an event on the anniversary of Baba Saheb. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan and Embassy officials joined the Indian community at the Gurudwara for the celebrations. On this auspicious occasion, a statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was unveiled at the Gurudwara. Ambassador shared his thoughts on the life and teachings of Baba Saheb and thanked the Indian community for organizing this pious event. He also urged the Indian community to join in the celebrations of events in the Embassy and reaffirmed our commitment to being at their disposal at all times.

 

Baishakhi celebrations held at Nhar El Ibrahim Gurudwara on April 17, 2022

On the occasion of the Baishakhi celebrations, the Embassy officials joined the Indian community at Nahr El Ibrahim Gurudwara on the 17th of April. The celebration saw large participation from the Indian community. Along with participation in the Satsang and other activities, the Embassy officials reaffirmed our help and support for the diaspora at all times. The Embassy officials also welcomed them to join in the Embassy events.

 

Key Note Address by Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan at a Rotary Event on April 26, 2022

Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan delivered a keynote address titled, " India's Role in the Revival of The World Economy, Post Covid-19" at the Annual Iftaar of Rotary Club Beirut Cosmopolitan on April 26, 2022. The event was joined by other chapter of Rotary Club in Lebanon and by the Chair of the India-Lebanon Inter country Rotary Committee. More than 60 participants attended the event. Ambassador spoke about India’s incredible growth story, strong fundamentals of Indian economy and various measures taken by Government of India under Hon’ble PM to make it a favorite destination for investments and doing business. He also mentioned about the vaccination in India, post-Covid economic recovery and the US$ 400 bn. export by India to the World in the last financial year. He also mentioned about the major structural reforms what have been launched by the Indian government to boost the long-term outlook of the economy and highlighted various initiatives like the AtmaNirbhar Bharat Mission, Digital India Mission, Start Up India Initiative and the Gati Shakti Mission for upgrading of infrastructure. Ambassador also spoke about various multilateral engagement of India during the Covid times specially with QUAD. Ambassador also spoke about Vaccine Maitri initiative, India’s role in ensuring food security to the World and India’s upcoming G20 presidency. It was followed by an interesting & lively discussion & interaction.

 

Know India Day event held at Embassy premises of Lebanon on May 5

The Embassy organized the 'Know India Day' event at the Embassy premises on 5th May. Students from the Institut of Moderne du Liban participated in the event. The event included a screening of short films, a presentation on Indian and Bollywood dance & also interaction of Amb Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan with the students. Ambassador thanked the management of the Institute is taking the initiative to collaborate with the Indian Embassy. Ambassador also presented books about India to the teachers and students.

 

Celebration of Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti in Lebanon

As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Embassy celebrated the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore on May 9 at the Embassy premises. The Embassy staff along with members of the Indian diaspora paid floral tributes to the Kaviguru. A few embassy staff recited poems on this solemn occasion. The event was joined by members of the Indian community.

 

Celebration of World Bicycle Day celebration


The Embassy of India and Makhzoumi Foundation jointly organised the celebration of World Bicycle Day on June 3, 2022. The event was organised at the Beirut Waterfront. The United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 as International World Bicycle Day in the year 2018. The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognizes "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmental friendly and sustainable means of transport.”


The event was supported by the Beirut Municipality, Makhzoumi Foundation, Solidere S.A.L. and Beirut by Bike.


Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan addressed the gathering and in his address thanked all the organisations who supported the event. Ambassador Dr. Khan conveyed his sincere gratitude to Beirut by Bike for providing bikes on this special occasion.  


Ambassador Dr. Khan reminded all participants about the benefits of riding bicycle. Ambassador Khan encouraged the participants to take part in all sports activities apart from bicycle to keep fit and healthy.
Mrs. May Makhzoumi, President of the Makhzoumi Foundation in her speech told that the Makhzoumi Foundation has been celebrating the World Bicycle Day since its first year and this year, she and her Foundation was very much happy to collaborate with the Embassy. Mrs. Makhzoumi flagged off the bicycle ride. There were around 60 people took part in the event.  


All participants from the Embassy and from the Foundation rode the bicycle enthusiastically. Ambassador Dr. Khan led the bicycle ride and conveyed the message of health is wealth.

 

Embassy of India, Beirut observes World Environment Day and inaugurates two eco-conservation projects in Lebanon


As part of ongoing activities under the Azadi ka Amirt Mahotsav the Embassy of India, Beirut observed World Environment Day on June 5, 2022, at the Shouf Biosphere Reserve.  Shouf Biosphere Reserve is the largest Cedar reserve in Lebanon and covers about 5% of whole area of Lebanon.  


The event was attended by Mr. Charles Nojaim, President of Shouf Biosphere Reserve, Mr.  Amine Thebiane, Director General of Ministry of Tourism, Mr Walid Zeineddine, Director General of Ministry of Education, Dr. Nasser Zeidan, President of Mrusti Municipality and Mr. Neeraj Singh, Representatives of United Nations in Lebanon, Mr Nizar Hani, senior official of the Biospehre Reserve and other local dignitaries and guests.  


On this occasion, Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan inaugurated ‘India-Lebanon Friendship Trails’ at Al Mrusti and Maasser sites at the Biosphere Reserve. These are afforestation sites where 800 saplings/plants of Cedars and other varieties have been planted by the Embassy as part of Quick Impact Project supporting the conservation efforts of the Reserve. Ambassador Dr. Khan also inaugurated Multipurpose Reception Cabin at Maasser site in the Reserve. The Cabin is named as ‘India-Lebanon Friendship Cabin’. These projects have been undertaken with the generous donation of the Government of India through Embassy of India, Beirut.


Mr. Charles Nojaim, President of Shouf Biosphere Reserve thanked the Government of India for the generous support to revive the environment in the protected area of Shouf. These projects will be testimony of India-Lebanon long term friendship.


Mr Nizar Hani, senior official of the Biospehre Reserve gave an overview of the projects and also informed that very soon the Reserve is going to start new activities like Bicycle track and paragliding at the Maasser site and that the as ‘India-Lebanon Friendship Cabin’ will become the focal points for these activities.   
These Projects are also part of India’s commitments towards environment protection and fighting Climate Change. Visitors may visit the Shouf Biosphere Reserve and enjoy the beauty of the place.

 

Inauguration of Exhibition on Rabindranath Tagore at Gibran Museum, Bsharri : "Gibran hosts Tagore"


As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an Exhibition on life and works of Rabindranath Tagore was inaugurated  on June 11, 2022 at Gibran Museum Bsharri by Ambassador Dr Suhel Khan, Mayor of Bsharri Mr. Fredy Kayrouz, Head of Gibran National Committee Mr. Joseph Feninos & Director of Museum Mr. Joseph Geagea.


In his address, Amb Dr Khan thanked the Giran Museum and Gibran National Committee for hosting the Exhibition.  Ambassador Khan mentioned about the connect between the two famous contemporary Poets Rabindranath Tagore and Gibran Khalil Gibran. Ambassador Khan recited Tagore's famous Poem, "Where the mind is without fear & head is held high...." & also recited a line from his famous composition,  "Jodi tor dak shune keu na ase tobe ekla cholo re".


The Exhibition was open for public from June 12 till June 17, 2022.

8th International Day of Yoga at Byblos


The Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated on June 18, 2022 8th International Day of Yoga in Byblos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World, in the backdrop of majestic Mediterranean Sea and the historical Byblos Castle, the site for discovery of most ancient phonetic alphabets. The Yoga Day was celebrated in collaboration with Jbail-Byblos Municipality. Yoga sessions were led by reps of yoga schools- One Yoga Samantha & Yoga With Nisrine and others.

 

8th International Day of Yoga at Beirut

Embassy of India, Beirut organised 8th International Day of Yoga at Sanayeh Park, Beirut with large number of Indian & Lebanese yoga enthusiasts. H.E. Abir Ali, Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants graced the occasion & appreciated Embassy’s effort to promote the benefits of Yoga in these challenging times. Roundtable Discussion on Yoga at Makhzoumi Foundation

As part of #IDY2022, Makhzoomi Foundation & the Embassy hosted a Roundtable discussion on Yoga on June 20, 2022. Dr Jackie Maalouf, President National Diabetes Organization made a detailed presentation about Yoga benefits in Diabetes management and in promoting overall health.

The Embassy of India, Beirut organised a Business Seminar in collaboration with Department of MSME, Government of Madhya Pradesh on June 23, 2022. The Seminar was attended by Heads of Chamber of Commerce in Lebanon and top Business persons. The Seminar was followed by B2B interaction  for exploring opportunities in the food & agriculture sectors between Lebanon & Madhya Pradesh.

 

IDY 2022 celebrations at Tripoli, North Lebanon

The Embassy in association with the Elite Centre for Culture and Education, Tripoli organized a yoga event at Tripoli on 24th June 2022. The event was hosted at the Miramar Beach Resort. The event was attended by Member of Parliament H.E. Elie Khoury, Head of Mission of Kazakhstan H.E. Yerzan Kalikinov, President of Elite centre Dr. Imane Kamali and many other local dignitaries. The yoga event saw participation of more than 100 yoga enthusiasts. The Yoga session was led by Ms. Dana Shamseddin, Art of Living.

 

Celebration of 8th International Day of Yoga at Rest House Tyre Hotel & Resort, Tyre, South Lebanon

As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), for celebration of 75th year of India’s Independence and continuing with the IDY2022 celebrations, Embassy of India, Beirut organized a sixth and final evnet on 08th International Day Yoga on June 30, 2022 from 1830 hours onwards in collaboration with Rest House Tyre Hotel & Resort and local partners at Tyre, South Lebanon. The event was hosted at the harbour next to the Tyre beach, South Lebanon.

In his welcome address, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan thanked Rest House Tyre for hosting the yoga event for the first time in the city of Tyre, one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. He also welcomed all the participants who showed a lots of enthusiasm in joining the yoga session. Ambassador Khan highlighted the importance of practicing yoga in daily life.

After the welcome remarks by Ambassador, yoga sessions of around 45 minutes were led by Mr Sreekumar, Ms. Rola Ghaddar, and and Ms. Josiane Azar, renowned Yoga Teachers in Lebanon.

The Yoga Event was attended by Mr. Halim Haddad, Hotel & Resort Manager, Ms. Bane Khalife, Public Relations & Business Development, Dr. Binod Sharma, Chief Medical Officer UNIFIL and a large number of local Lebanese participants and UNIFIL Officers. More than 120 yoga enthusiasts participated in the the Yoga Sessions.

The event was concluded with a distribution of plaque of appreciations, certificates and books on yoga to the Rest House Tyre Team and the yoga teachers. Yoga Mats and T-shirts were also distributed.

 

Miri Piri Day of the sixth Sikh Guru Sri Guru Hargovind Sahib Ji

The officials of Embassy of India, Beirut visited Nahr e Ibrahim Gurdwara on the occasion of Miri Piri Day of the sixth Sikh Guru Sri Guru Hargovind Sahib Ji on July 10, 2022. The Embassy also organised an Open House for the Indian Diaspora members at the Gurdwara and provided solutions to the problems on Consular matters.


Screening of Bollywood Movie ‘Rustom’

Embassy of India, Beirut screened the Bollywood Movie ‘Rustom’ on July 22, 2022 (Friday) as part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations and Monthly Bollywood Evening of the Embassy. The screening was attended by many Lebanese friends of India, officers of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of El Khalil Foundation, an NGO in Hasbaya district. The movie was screened in Arabic language to target more Arabic language speakers. The screening of the movie was well appreciated by everyone.

 

Medal Day Parade

Indian Battalion at UNIFIL, South Lebanon organised a Medal Day Parade on July 26, 2022. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan attended the Medal Day Parade and Medal Award Ceremony at the UNIFIL. CO Col PN Sujay Kumar, SM and other soldiers from the Indian Battalion received UN Service Medals. The Medal Day Parade & Medal Award Ceremony was also attended by Commander Sector East UNIFIL, Representatives of Lebanese Army & local dignitaries.

 

Commemoration of Quit India Movement: On 8th August 2022, Embassy observed the commemoration of Quit India Movement and screened the virtual narration of the historic Quit India Movement by Dr. Shobhana Radhakrishna.

 

Screening of Bollywood Movie ‘Neerja: Embassy of India, Beirut launched the celebration of Iconic Week of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on August 12, 2022. On this occasion, the Mission screened the Bollywood Movie ‘Neerja’. The movie was also the part of Monthly Bollywood Evening by the Embassy. The screening was attended by many Lebanese friends of India and Embassy officers and their family members. The screening of the movie was well appreciated by everyone and was followed by refreshments.

 

Report on Reception at Baalbek: On the occasion of 76 Independence Day of India, Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan hosted a reception at Baalbek on 13 August 2022. The reception was attended by members of the Civil Society of this culturally vibrant region. Vice President of Baalbeck municipality Mr. Mostapha Shall, representative of Governor of Baalbeck-Hermel region, Ms. Hiba Zaaiter, heads of various municipalities, members of Baalbeck-Hermel municipality were present during this event.

 

Celebration of Festival of Color at Byblos: As part of this Iconic Week, the Embassy and Satguru Travels along with other local partners organised Festival of Colors on August 14, 2022 at Nomad Resort, Byblos. Holi is very popular in Lebanon, as in the other countries. To generate the interest in Lebanese travellers to travel to India, the Mission put up India Tourism Corner on this occasion. The India Tourism Corner consisted of tourism material covering popular touristic destinations of India. Artifacts from Tribal India – Aatmanirbhar Bharat was also put up at the India Tourism Corner. The Corner was a major attraction for the visitors. Several visitors visited the Corner and enquired about popular touristic destinations. People enjoyed the festival of colours.

 

Illumination of Embassy Buildings: As a part of celebration of 76th Independence Day Celebration, the Embassy buildings were illuminated with tricolor lighting. Both Chancery and Consular Buildings were illuminated with tri-colour LED piped lights.

 

Flag Hoisting Ceremony on 76th Independence Day: Flag hoisting ceremony on the occasion of Independence Day 2022 held at the Embassy Premises on 15 August 2022 in the morning at 09:00 AM with full pride, enthusiasm and fervour. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan started the event by offering floral tributes to Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi and then hoisted the National Flag and everyone present in the gathering sang the National Anthem. Thereafter, Ambassador read out the Address to the Nation by Hon’ble Rashtrapatiji and also emphasized the importance of Har Ghar Tiranga initiative. This time, due to easing of COVID-19 situation in Lebanon, the ceremony was attended by more than 150 Indian community members, members of the Indian Battalion, Lebanese friends of India and Embassy staff with their children and other family members. A few of the Embassy Officials along with their family members sang our National Song “Vande Matram” in Sanskrit followed with rendition of a popular patriotic song “Dil Diya Hai Jaan Bhi Denge” from Hindi Movie “Karma”. These patriotic songs were hugely appreciated by the community members present. After that, winners of AKAM Quiz Competition-2022 was also announced and medals were distributed. Video message of MOS V. Muraleedharan was also telecast.

Har Ghar Tiranga: The Embassy and the Indian community celebrated Har Ghar Tiranga campaign from 11-15 August 2022. Ambassador made an appeal to all Indian community members to join this campaign. All the Embassy officers and staff flew the Indian flag, with their families, at their homes. Indian community members also joined this campaign. Celebration of 76th Independence of India at Indian Battalion HQ at UNIFIL in South Lebanon: The Embassy of India Beirut and the Indian Battalion at UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL, organized a grand celebration of 76th Independence of India at the Indian Battalion HQ in South Lebanon on 15 August 2022. The event was attended by Force Commander of UNIFIL Brig. General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz of Spain, Sector East Commander of UNIFIL, Ambassadors of Kazakhstan & Germany, other diplomats, mayors of various municipalities in the region, senior representatives of the Lebanese Armed Forces, representatives of other Battalions and other Lebanese friends. T

 

Dance performance by Chandigarh University Girls Team at Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Saida (Sidon): The Embassy of India Beirut in association with Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Saida (Sidon) organized a punjabi dance performance as a part of Iconic Week Celebrations from 12-18 August, 2022 under AKAM on 16 August 2022 from 1900 hrs to mark the 75 years of India’s Independence. The event was attended by Mr. Mohammad Saleh, President of Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Saida and South Lebanon, Mr. Haj Hasan Fadel Saleh, Owner of Fadel Saleh Establishment, Mr. Jamal Jouni, Head of Commercial Section of Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Ali Abdullah, Owner AMACO and other important business personalities. More than 75 important persons attended the event.

 

Donation of Books to the Lebanese National Library: As part of the celebrations of Iconic Week of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Embassy of India, Beirut with the support of Ministry of Culture in Lebanon inaugurated India Book Corner at the Lebanese National Library on 16 August 2022, in the presence of Hon’ble Minister of Culture of Lebanon Judge Mohammad Wissam El-Mortada, officials of Ministry of Culture and guests.During the ceremony, more than 180 books on India were donated to the Library and will be available to the visitors to the library. The donation includes books on various cultural, social, and economic topics, as well as biographies on Mahatma Gandhi, father of the nation and other eminent personalities.

 

Dance Performance followed by National Day Reception at St. Joseph University, Beirut: On the glorious occasion of 75 years of India’s Independence being celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), the Embassy of India, Beirut organized punjabi dance performances by Chandigarh University Girls Team sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, ICCR, New Delhi under weeklong celebrations of Iconic Week from 12-18 August, 2022 followed by National Day Reception on 17th August, 2022 at St. Joseph University (USJ) to mark this important event. This event was organized in association with Association for Development of Lebanese Indian Relations (ADLIR), and our other local partners. The video message of MOS V. Muraleedharan was screened which was greatly appreciated by the audience. In his address, MOS threw light on the essence & significance of AKAM. He, apart from highlighting the history and richness of bilateral relationship between India and Lebanon, specially thanked for all the friends of India in Lebanon for their active participation in making the celebration of Iconic Week a success. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the leadership in Lebanon for taking good care of Indian citizens in Lebanon.

 

Tourism Seminar “Heritage India” The Embassy of India, Beirut organised Iconic Week of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, which started on 12 August and lasted till August 18, 2022. Among several other events, an event on Tourism promotion was also planned. As part of this week long celebrations, the Embassy organised a Tourism Seminar 'Heritage India' on August 18, 2022 with the support of the Association of Travel & Tourist Agents in Lebanon (ATTAL). The Tourism Department of Uttar Pradesh, the Jungle Lodge, an Eco Tourism promotion Undertaking of Karnataka Tourism Department and India Tourism Office, Dubai joined the Seminar virtually. The Seminar was also joined by top tour operators in Lebanon, who are members of the ATTAL. The Tourism Department of Uttar Pradesh was represented by Shri Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Principal Secretary Tourism & Culture and Shri Ashwini Kumar Pandey, Director, Department of Tourism and MD, Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTD). State of Karnataka was represented by Shri Manoj Kumar, MD, Jungle Lodge and Resort, Department of Tourism of Karnataka. Shri Seetharaman Avany represented the India Tourism, Dubai. Mr. Jean Abboud, President of ATTAL co-Chaired the Seminar with me. 12 Board Members of ATTAL were also present during the Seminar.

 

हिंदी दिवस समारोह, 2022

भारतीय दूतावास, बेरूत ने 17 सितंबर 2022 को चांसरी परिसर में हिंदी दिवस, 2022 मनाया।

a. हिंदी दिवस समारोह में दूतावास के सभी कर्मचारी अपने परिवारों और भारत के लेबनानी मित्र के साथ शामिल हुए। सबसे पहले, श्री रितेश कुमार, अताशे ने श्रोताओं को हिंदी दिवस, 2022 की हार्दिक शुभकामनाओं के साथ कार्यक्रमों के प्रवाह के बारे में जानकारी दी। उसके बाद, भारत के माननीय गृह मंत्री, श्री अमित शाह जी का संदेश का प्रसारण किया गया। गृह मंत्री के संदेश को दूतावास के अधिकारियों ने ध्यान से सुना।

b. श्री रितेश कुमार, अताशे और श्रीमती सुषमा चावला ने एक देशभक्ति गीत 'हिंद देश के निवासी...' प्रस्तुत किया और फिर श्री दीपेश होसकेरे, भरतनाट्यम नृत्य शिक्षक-सह-कलाकार ने प्रसिद्ध बॉलीवुड फिल्म 'वीर जरा' का देशभक्ति गीत 'ऐसा देश है मेरा ….' गाया और सबको मंत्रमुग्ध कर दिया । दूतावास के अधिकारियों के बेटे अश्मित चंदेल और सृजन ख़वास द्वारा कविता पाठ किया गया। इसके बाद, श्री हेमंत गौतम, अताशे, श्री. अनिल कुमार, अताशे और श्री. गोपाल प्रसाद ने उनकी हिंदी कविताओं का पाठ किया। सांतनु कुमार सिंह, तृतीय सचिव ने भी अपनी स्वयं की लिखी हिंदी कविता शीर्षक 'संघर्ष' का पाठ किया। इस मौके पर हिंदी भाषा के सामान्य ज्ञान, समसामयिक मामलों और ज्ञान पर आधारित एक हिंदी प्रश्नोत्तरी प्रतियोगिता का भी आयोजन किया गया जिसमें सभी अधिकारियों और उनके परिवार के सदस्यों ने भाग लिया। राजदूत डॉ. सुहेल एजाज खान के साथ श्री संदीप ग्रोवर, चांसरी प्रमुख और श्री. पी. पट्टाभि, द्वितीय सचिव(कांसुलर ) ने भी हिंदी प्रश्नोत्तरी प्रतियोगिता में भाग लिया। सभी प्रतिभागियों ने हिंदी प्रश्नोत्तरी प्रतियोगिता की सराहना की।

c. हिंदी प्रश्नोत्तरी के सभी विजेताओं के साथ-साथ कार्यक्रम के प्रतिभागियों को राजदूत महोदय द्वारा प्रमाण पत्र और स्मृति चिन्ह से सम्मानित किया गया। कार्यक्रम का समापन जूस, चाय और पानी के साथ भारतीय खाना समोसा, गुलाब जामुन के रूप हल्के जलपान के साथ हुआ।

 

India-Lebanese Art Exhibition in Beirut

An international art exhibition “Peace 3” was inaugurated on 17th September,2022, at the UNESCO Palace, Beirut in the presence of Hon’ble Minister of Culture of Lebanon, Judge Muhammad Wissam Al-Mortada and Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan. This international exhibition was jointly managed and organized by artists/art foundations of three countries: from India, plastic artist Minto Deka, founder of the SMD Art Foundation, plastic artist Janarita Armouti from Jordan, and Lebanon, plastic artist Bernard Reno. Paintings by 110 artists from Lebanon and about 40 paintings from 13 different countries including India, were displayed. On this occasion Hon’ble Minister stressed the importance of this international exhibition and the message of peace emanating from art. In his address, Ambassador Dr. Khan spoke about importance of art and the strong cultural ties between India and Lebanon.

 

Celebration of Gandhi Jayanti and International Day of Non-Violence

The Embassy organized the following activities:

I. Prayer Meeting at the Embassy

A Prayer Meeting at the Embassy was organized in the morning on October 2. Ambassador and all officers and staff members paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding/ offering flowers at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi. Family members of India-based Officers also joined the event and paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. After that, a favourite bhajan of Gandhiji “ Vaishanav Jan to Jene Kahiye je….” was presented. At the end of the Prayer Meeting, Ambassador launched the Cleanliness Drive at the Embassy.

 

II. Talk by Dr. Sobhana Radhakrishna

The Embassy organized screening of Gandhi Talk by Dr. Sobhana Radhakrishna, internationally acclaimed Speaker on Mahatma Gandhi on the topic ‘Mahatma Gandhi’s Global Leadership for Peace, Non-Violence & Satyagraha’ on this occasion. Ambassador along with all Embassy Officers and Officials watched the Gandhi Talk.  Later the Talk was also broadcast on the Social Media Channels of the Embassy.

 

III. Celebration of International Day of Non-Violence in South Lebanon:

The Embassy of India, Beirut and the Indian Battalion at UNIFIL observed International Day of Non-Violence on October 2, 2022 at Mahatma Gandhi Park in Ebl Al Saki in South Lebanon. The celebrations included releasing of Balloons & Doves to spread the message of Non-Violence & Peace. The event was attended by Member of Parliament Elias Jaradeh, Brig Gen Ignacio Olazabal Elorz, CO Sector East at UNIFIL, Col. PN Sujay Kumar, Sena Medal, CONTICO INDBATT, Mayors of Ebel El Saqi, Chebba, Kafar Chouba and other towns and villages of the region, representatives of Lebanese Armed Forces and local school children. To mark this day, the students of local schools displayed their sketches reflecting their ideas of Peace, Non-Violence and Co-existence. Earlier in the day, Indian Battalion organised a Peace Hike, which was joined by local Lebanese from the nearby villages and soldiers of Indian Battalion.  Ambassador Dr. Suhel Khan also met volunteers at the Red-Cross Centre in Chebba Village. This Centre is built with Indian assistance as a Quick Impact Project and was inaugurated last year.

 

Swachha Bharat - Special Campaign 2.0

The Embassy conducted Special Campaign 2.0 for Swachhata throughout the Month of October 2022. References from MPs were disposed off in time. All the members of the staff were sensitized to the concept of Swachhata. Ambassador personally toured all the rooms of the Embassy a number of times and sensitized the Staff to keep their offices clean, clutter free and organized. Special focus was given to cleaning open areas of the Embassy, consular section, the roof, storage rooms and the pantry. Curtains of the stage were cleaned. The Mission made target to weed out old files, throw away irreparable electric items, furniture, rusted iron almirahs, broken glasses, broken wooden frames etc. after following established rules for disposal of these items. Ambassador formed a committee to look into disposing off such unservisable goods which have lived their life span. Overall, the Mission conducted five (05) cleanliness drives this month; out of this, one can be classified as the continuous cleanliness drive, while other 4 were special drives. A lot of cleaning, organization took place during these drives. All the officers and members of the staff cleaned their own rooms and work spaces and organized their desks, cabinets and work spaces. The Consular team cleaned and organized the consular hall. The Mission weeded out 70 files. A full physical verification and reconciliation of the consular documents was also taken up.

 

QIP- Donation of bikes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants

During the visit to Beirut, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Secretary (CPV&OIA) called on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of Lebanon H.E. Mr. Abdallah Bou Habib on October 3, 2022. As part of India’s bilateral assistance, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed also handed over 5 units of Made-In -India motorbikes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants. Another Set of 5 Motor Biles were handed over to Governor of Beirut Judge Marwan Abboud.

 

Business Seminar ‘Strengthening India-Lebanon Trade Relations’

During the visit of Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Secretary (CPV&OIA) and Dr. Pradeep Rajpurohit, JS ( WANA), Ministry of External Affairs to Lebanon, a High-Level Business Seminar and Gala Dinner was organised by the Embassy of India in Beirut on October 3, 2022. The Seminar was attended by the Mr. George Bouchekian, Minister of Industry, Mr. Johnny Corm, Minister of Telecommunications, Mr. Danny Gedaoun, Director General Ministry of Industry (equivalent to our Industry Secretary), Dr. Mohammad Abou Haidar, Director General Ministry of Economy and Trade (equivalent to our Commerce Secretary), Mr. Fadi Snan, Director General Ministry of Public Health (equivalent to our Health Secretary), Ms. Abir Ali, Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affair, Representatives of all Chambers of Commerce in Lebanon, Members of ADLIR (Association of Development of Lebanese India Relations) and top business community. Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, in his Key-Note address spoke at length about Economic recovery in India, post-Covid and gave an overview of India’s vision to become a 5 trillion USD Economy. He touched upon several economic themes including World Bank forecasts for high economic growth in India, initiatives like Gati Shakti, Digital India, Start Up Ecosystem in India, continuous stream of high-level investments in India, National Logistic Policy etc. He also shared Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of India of 2047. He also said that India could be a dependable economic partner for Lebanon and invited Business delegation from Lebanon to India and said that he thinks that a target of bilateral trade of 1 Billion USD was possible in next 3 years. Minister of Industry Mr. George Bouchekian, in his address, supported the idea of greater economic engagement with India while Minister of Telecommunications Mr. Johnny Corm said that India is a role model that Lebanese Industry and businesses should be looking at for growing Lebanese economy.

 

Nation’s Day Festival, Beirut

The Embassy participated in the 08th Nation's Day Festival organized by the Beirut Golden Awards Association under the patronage of Ministry of Tourism and Culture and support of Beirut Governor, Beirut at Beirut Souks on October 07th, 2022. It is an annual cultural and tourism promotion event. The Embassy depicted facets of Incredible India and Indian culture through its Stall. The Festival was inaugurated by Minister of Culture Judge Mohammed Mortada & Governor of Beirut Judge Marwan Abboud, in presence of Mr Mohammed Halwani, President Beirut Golden Awards. Popular Indian snacks Samosa and Gulab Jamun were also offered to the visitors. Mr. Deepesh Hoskere, Bharatnatyam Dance Teacher cum Performer and hist wo Bharatnatyam students Ms. Seiko Sugita, and Ms Shailja Kumari presented enthralling Bharatnatyam dance performance depicting Lord Shiva.

 

Celebration of ITEC Day

The Embassy celebrated ITEC Day on 12th October. The Event was attended by a large number of ITEC alumni representing diverse sectors/organizations, including Lebanese Parliament; Internal Security; General Security; various Ministries of Government of Lebanon, and Defence Forces. The guests of honour included HE Dr. Bilal Abdallah, Member of Parliament; HE Dany Gedeon, DG, Ministry of Industry; HE Louis Lahoud, DG Ministry of Agriculture; HE Lahoud Lahoud, DG, Chief of Protocol of Prime Minister; Mr. Walid Zeineddine, Head of External Affairs and Scholarships at the Ministry of Education & Higher Education; Dr. Hala El Abdallah, Director of Studies at the Ministry of Agriculture; Mr. Hicham Chehab, Directorate of International Organizations, Conferences and International Organizations, Conferences and Cultural Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants. Apart from Ambassador, Dr. Bilal Abdallah, Member of Parliament, Dany Gedeon DG, Ministry of Industry and Ms. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Centre of Culture and Education addressed the audience. A few ITEC alumni also took to the floor and shared their experiences of their stay and training in India. The official programme was concluded with a dance performance by a 20-minutes Bharatnatyam dance performance by Mr. Deepesh Hoskere, Dance Teacher from ICCR which left the audience enthralled. The formal programme was followed by a reception.

 

Webinar held on the occasion of Ayurveda Day-2022

The Embassy hosted a Webinar on “Ayurveda for Health” to on the occasion of celebration of Ayurveda Day on 22nd October, 2022 at the Chancery premises. The Event was attended virtually by many participants including six speakers. Speakers included Dr. Haifa Abou Assi, President of Lebanese Chiropractic Association; Dr. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Center, Tripoli; Ms. Donia Najjar, founder of Sreedevi Yoga Center; Ms. Rita Homsi, Reiki Master & Yoga Teacher & Dr. Digambar Patra, Profeesor

 

Celebration of Diwali Festival

The Embassy organized Diwali celebration on October 23, 2022 in the Embassy Premises. The event was attended by the Embassy staff, their families and many members of the Indian community.

 

Seminar “Importance of Unity in Multicultural Societies”

A Seminar titled, “Importance of Unity in Multicultural Societies” was organized by the Indian Embassy on the occasion of National Unity Day of India at Elite Center Tripoli on 28 October 2022. The event was attended by prominent personalities from Tripoli including General Ashraf Rifi, former Minister of Justice and current Member of Parliament, and Members of Parliament Mr. Ihab Matar, Mr. Elie Khoury, Mr. Karim Kabbara, Mr. Rami Kanj and Mr. Taha Naji and many educational and social personalities. Ambassador of Kazakhstan also attended the event as the special Guest. Speakers included Dr Imane Kamali, President of the Elite Centre, Judge Nabil Sari, Dr Jacqueline Ayoub, former Director of Faculty of Letters and Human sciences at Lebanese University and Dr Nabil Mohsen, a Neurologist and Indologist. All the speakers spoke about greatness of India and its place in the World as the best example of multicultural society and a nation with Unity in Diversity. Ambassador Dr Suhel Khan spoke about the importance of the day and highlighted contributions of Sardar Patel in India’s Independence movement and in nation building after India gained Independence. Dr Nabil Mohsen presented to Ambassador, Arabic translation of Upanishadas by Sri Aurbindo, which Dr Mohsen has translated to Arabic. A photo exhibition on the life of Sardar Patel was displayed at the venue. The event concluded with a dance performance by Embassy Bharatnatyam dancer Mr. Deepesh Hoskere.

 

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas:

Various activities took place on this occasion:

 

I. Floral Tributes and Photo Exhibition

As a part of activities for Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2022, Ambassador Suhel Ajaz Khan administered the pledge on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas both in Hindi and English to all Officers and Officials of the Mission on 31st October, 2022. After that all floral tribute were paid to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by all officers of the Mission. On this occasion, a photo exhibition on life of Sardar Patel was also inaugurated by Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan. The Exhibition will remain open to public till 13th November, 2022.

 

II. Virtual Talk by Dr. Radhakrishna:

The Embassy organized virtual screening of a narration by Dr. Sobhana Radhakrishna, internationally acclaimed Speaker on the topic of ‘A Supreme Leader of Exemplary Qualities’ on the occasion of National Unity Day and 147th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Ambassador along with all India based Officers and local staff members of the Mission watched this Talk on Sardar Patel.

 

III. Unity Tea:

All India based officers and local staff members of the Mission assembled for UNI TEA on 31st October, 2022 in the Embassy premises. All members of the Mission individually also participated in this activity enthusiastically and took photographs and posted on their social media with hashtag #UNI_TEA_DAY and #National Unity Day.

 

IV. Unity Run:

Indian Battalion deployed at UNIFIL area of South Lebanon conducted Unity Run on 31st October, 2022. They also assembled for the UNI TEA.

 

Indian Basketball Team visited Lebanon

Indian National Basketball Team visited Lebanon from November 11 to 14. During this time, they played a FIBA World Cup 2023 qualifier match with the Lebanese Team. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Khan and officials from the Embassy met with the Indian Basketball Team on November 11 and wished them luck for their match and hosted a dinner in their honor. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan along with other Embassy officials attended the match on November 13 to cheer up Indian players. It was amazing ambiance, enthusiastic crowd, beats of drums & a great match. Many Lebanese audience cheered for the Indian team. The Indian team played well but lost to the Lebanese side.

 

Wreath Laying at Commonwealth War Cemetery

On November 12, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Khan joined others in offering respects to the fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day at the Commonwealth War Cemetery on November 12, 2022 at Beirut. More than 400 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during WW 1 and WW 2 are laid to rest in various cemeteries in Lebanon.

 

Unity Run at the Beirut Marathon

The Embassy officials along with the Indian community members participated in Unity Run as part of Beirut Marathon on November 13, 2022. The Embassy also adopted a Team of Lebanese students from different schools and Universities under the Adopt a Team Programme who joined hands in spreading the message of Unity & One Earth One Family One Future. Ambassador Dr. Khan presented certificates of participation to the Students after the run.

 

Celebration of Constitution Day 2022

As a part of on-going activities for celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Embassy of India, Beirut organized a seminar on the topic, “Constitutional Rights and Duties” on 25th November, 2022 in the Embassy Premises. Speakers included Hon’ble Judge Michel Tarazai, Member of the Lebanese Constitutional Council (equivalent to an Hon’ble Judge of Indian Supreme Court), Hon’ble Judge Dr. Maya Karam, & Dr. Zenab Mirza, a constitutional expert and professor at the prestigious American University of Beirut (AUB), apart from Ambassador Dr Suhel Khan. This is the second year in a row that our seminar on Constitution Day was attended by none other than a sitting judge of Lebanese Supreme Court.

The Seminar was attended by a number of important personalities including many lawyers, civil society members & Indian Diaspora.

Hon’ble Judge Michel Tarazai, Member of the Lebanese Constitutional Council, spoke about the constitutional law and the role of judiciary in defending the constitution. Hon’ble Judge Dr. Maya Karam spoke at length about the influence of Gandhian principles on the Indian Constitution. Dr. Zenab Mirza, a constitutional expert and professor at the prestigious American University of Beirut (AUB, spoke about contribution of Dr B.R. Ambedkar in drafting of the Indian Constitution and its salient features. Ambassador Dr. Khan shed light on various features of the Indian Constitution, and spoke about Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles of State Policy of the Indian Constitution. Ambassador also spoke about India’s upcoming G-20 Presidency and spoke about the principles of One Earth, One Family and One Future and Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam.

The event concluded with a Bharatnatyam Dance performance by the Embassy Dance Teacher, Shri Deepesh Hoskere followed by refreshments for the attendees. A prominent local TV network, Al Mayadeen TV covered the event.

 

Preamble Reading on the Constitution Day 2022:

To mark the adoption of Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on 26th November, 1949 as Constitution Day of India, The Embassy team gathered to read the Preamble of the Constitution & pledged to dedicate themselves to the ideals enshrined in the Constitution. Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan administered the preamble reading both in Hindi and English to all India based Officers and Officials.

 

Indian- Japanese collaboration in Bharatanatyam Dance

To showcase the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the Embassy of India, Beirut collaborated with Dreamers Japan and Japan Academic Center (CAJAP), Beirut for staging a play "Sky Dream" at the Theatre Le Monnot, Beirut. Embassy’s Dance Teacher Cum Performer Shri Deepesh Hoskere choreographed and showcased Bharatanatyam dance pieces along with his student Ms. Seiko Sugita, a Japanese dance artist based in Lebanon, as part of Japanese-Lebanese Theatre Play "Sky Dream" in the form of drama, music and dance. Their performance was appreciated with a thunderous applause from an audience of over 250 people. The play was directed by Engr. Eiko Minami, who is also founder of “Dreamers Japan”, an amateur theatrical drama group in Lebanon. Shri Sandeep Grover, Head of Chancery, attended the show and met the artists. Art of Living Trade Exhibition

Embassy of India set up an Indian Pavilion at the Art of Living Trade Exhibition at Forum de Beyrouth, Beirut. The Exhibition lasted from November 30 to December 4. This used to be an yearly exhibition with focus on home design, furniture and decorations, carpets, home equipment, hand-loom items, handicrafts, toys, tea, coffee, spices etc. However due to economic crises and Covid-19 the exhibition did not take place after 2018. This was also the first of any trade exhibitions organized by Lebanon in past 3 years. The Embassy Pavilion displayed catalogs of a number of Indian companies, including a number of catalogs received from the FIEO. Coffee Board sent their samples which were displayed and distributed at the Pavilion. Dubai Tourism also sent publicity material on Incredible India. The Mission is also printed and displayed a number of banner and flyers, particularly on Millet, ODOP items from UP, MP and Himachal Pradesh, Trade Portal of India, Business Portal of India, India’s Presidency of the G-20 etc. Ambassador Dr Suhel Khan joined Lebanese Minister of Tourism, H.E. Walid Nassar & other dignitaries at the opening of the Exhibition on November 30, 2022. Later, Ambassador also welcomed the Minister at the Indian Embassy Pavilion. A number of business personalities and visitors visited our Pavilion during the Exhibition and showed interest in various aspects of India, including enhancing business with India, tourism and Yoga.

 

Bharatnatyam/Bollywood Work Shop and performance

Embassy Dance Teacher Deepesh Hoskere conducted a dance workshop at Barja, Chouf on December 8, 2022 in an event organised by the Red Oak Organization, Hamra, Beirut. Many Lebanese, Syrian & Palestinian students enjoyed learning nuances of Indian dance. He also presented a Bharatnatyam-Bollywood Fusion performance.

 

Ambassador Visited to Shouf BioSphere Reserve


Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan alongwith team of Embassy officials visited the Shouf BioSphere Reserve & inspected the India-Lebanon Friendship Cabin. The Cabin was inaugurated in June this year as gift from India. With the upcoming winter season, the area is likely to see many visitors who will come to enjoy snow.

 

Celebration of Mahaparinirvan Diwas


The Embassy, along with the Indian Community, observed Mahaparinirvan Diwas on December 11 at Sant Ravidas Ji Gurudwara & paid homage to Bharat Ratna Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. On this occasion, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan garlanded the statue of Dr. Ambedkar followed by floral tributes by members of the Mission and Indian community. A special aarti was performed in the fond memory of Baba Saheb by Sh. Ram Swaroop Jee, an eminent member of the Gurudwara joined by all Indian Community members present there. Ambassador Dr. Khan, in his address, thanked Shri Ram Swaroop Jee for organizing the event and highlighted the contributions made by Dr. Ambedkar in drafting the Indian Constitution and also shared his insights on Baba Saheb’s life and his remarkable contributions in the social reforms, equality and justice in India. Ambassador briefed the Community about Embassy's various consular services and assured necessary help by the Embassy team in all consular issues. A Photo Exhibition on life of Dr Ambedkar was also was inaugurated by the Ambassador. Later the Embassy Consular Team conducted an Open House at the Gurudwara and addressed the issues & problems of the Indian community and provided necessary guidance.

 

Press Briefing about Jaipur Foot Camp in Lebanon

Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan & Lebanese Minister of Public Health Dr. Firas Abiad on December 12, 2022 announced the "Jaipur Foot" Camp in Lebanon at a Press Briefing organized in the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The Camp will be organized at Rafik Hariri University Hospital in Jan-Feb 2022 & will provide 300 artificial limbs to the beneficiaries in Lebanon, free of cost, as gift from India.

 

Donated a 45KVA generator to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon

As part of continuing assistance to Lebanon, the Embassy donated a 45KVA generator to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon on December 19, 2022. The donation was received by Secretary General H.E. Hani Chemaitelly. Ambassador Khan also briefed him on the upcoming "Jaipur Foot Camp" in Beirut.

 

Veer Bal Diwas

The Embassy observed #VeerBalDiwas on December 26, 2022 with the participation of the Indian Community members. Ambassador Dr Khan led the Community in paying tributes & remembering the courage of the Sahibzades, the Martyr Sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, for their unparalleled bravery & sacrifices. Indian Community Children, Ms. Shailaja Kumari presented a song and Ms. Anika Chandel presented a Poem. Embassy staff member Mr. Deepesh Hoskere also presented a patriotic song. A presentation on life of Sahibzades was also screened on the occasion.

 

Swachhata Pakhwada

To mark the beginning of Swacchata Pakhwada, Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan administered the Swachhata Pledge to all Embassy Officials in the morning of 02 January 2023. After the pledge, the Cleanliness Drive was started by the Embassy Officials. Ambassador directed everyone to keep the Embassy Premises and his/her office clean and devote two hours per week to voluntarily work for cleanliness. All the members of the staff pledged to continue their focus on "Hygiene and Sanitation" in the Embassy premises which would also be helpful in the prevention against Coronavirus (COVID-19) and curb the use of Single-Use-Plastic (SUP) and discourage the use of plastic items in offices. Ambassador and HOC personally toured all the rooms of the Embassy a number of times and sensitized the Staff to keep their offices clean, clutter free and organized. Special focus was given to cleaning open areas of the Embassy, Consular Section, the roof, storage rooms and the Chancery kitchenette. To ensure efficient waste management in partnership of everyone, Mission has also put two large separate dustbins for wet waste (green colour) and recyclable waste (blue colour) in the Chancery open area. The Mission reviewed 125 old files physically, out of which 77 files which had outlived the prescribed life span as per MEA Retention Schedule, were weeded out.

 

विश्व हिंदी दिवस एवं प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस समारोह -2023

भारतीय दूतावास बेरूत परिसर में दिनांक 10 जनवरी 2023 को संध्या 5 बजे से विश्व हिंदी दिवस एवं प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस समारोह का आयोजन किया गया. इस कार्यक्रम में प्रवासी भारतीय मित्रगण, स्थानीय लेबनीज मित्र के अतिरिक्त दूतावास के सभी कर्मचारी अपने परिवार सहित सम्मिलित हुए।


सर्वप्रथम सूत्रधार श्री रितेश कुमार ने श्रोताओं को विश्व हिंदी दिवस एवं प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस की शुभ कामनाएं देते हुए कार्यक्रम के प्रवाह के बारे में जानकारी दी. तत्पश्चात माननीय प्रधान मंत्रीजी का प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस पर सम्बोधन का वीडियो प्रसारण किया गया, जिसे उपस्थित लोगों द्वारा काफी सराहा गया. उसके बाद राजदूत महोदय ने सभा को सम्बोधित किया एवं प्रधानमंत्रीजी के विश्व हिंदी दिवस के अवसर पर दिए गए सन्देश को लोगों के सामने प्रस्तुत किया. अपने सम्बोधन में उन्होंने तमाम आर्थिक परेशानियों के होते हुए भी लेबनान में स्थित प्रवासी भारतीयों के योगदान की काफी सराहना की।


इसके बाद स्थानीय लेबनानी प्रोफेसर श्रीमती रीमा साब के हिंदी सीखने के सम्बन्ध में वीडियो क्लिप का प्रसारण किया गया। इसके बाद दूतावास परिवार के सदस्य श्री समीर कुमार खवास ने अपनी स्वरचित कविता - "आज़ादी का अमृत महोत्सव" प्रस्तुत की । फिर उनके सुपुत्र श्री सृजन खवास ने अपनी कविता प्रस्तुत की. फिर श्री दीपेश होस्केरे ने बहुचर्चित हिंदी फीचर का गीत "ये जो देश है तेरा" का गायन किया।


विश्व हिंदी दिवस पर दूतावास ने एक निबंध लेखन प्रतियोगिता का आयोजन किया गया था. निबंध का शीर्षक था "आज़ादी के 75 साल ". इस प्रतियोगिता में इंडियन बटालियन के 43 साथियों ने भाग लिया था. इस प्रतियोगिता में प्रथम स्थान पाने वाले सूबेदार मेजर राजेश कुमार दुबे, द्वितीय स्थान पाने वाले लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल मनोज राठी एवं तृतीय स्थान पाने वाले सार्जेंट अखिलेश कुमार को राजदूत महोदय ने प्रशंशा प्रमाण पत्र एवं शील्ड प्रस्तुत किया. इस कार्यक्रम में भाग लेने वाले अन्य प्रतिभागियों को भी राजदूत महोदय ने प्रशंसा प्रमाण पत्र एवं पुरस्कार से उत्साहवर्धन किया.


“Sky Dream” an Indian, Japanese and Lebanese theatrical performance

As part of ongoing celebrations of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, ‘Sky Dream’, an Indian, Japanese and Lebanese theatrical performance told through music, dance and songs, was organised by Beirut Arab University and Elite Center of Culture and Education in association with Embassy of India and Embassy of Japan in Tripoli on Saturday 14 January 2023.

The Indian performance led by the Embassy Dance and Yoga Teacher Mr. Deepesh Hoskere, started with traditional invocatory dance piece Mahaganapatim, showcasing the Elephant faced God Ganesha. Second was the depiction of the Japanese Oni characters using the Indian theme of “Kalinga Narthana” on river Yamuna, in Vrindavan. Third piece was depiction on “Gajendra Moksham from Bhagvata Purana” using Japanese drum beats. It was followed by a beautiful traditional piece “Thillana”. The presentation ended with a Bharatanatyam & Kuchipudi fusion steps on famous Lebanese song “Bint El Shalabiya”. Each part was well narrated for the audience in Arabic language before the performance. The Japanese artists presented songs and play sequences based on a Samurai story.

The event was attended by more than 300 persons including including Major Ashraf Rifi, Member of Parliament, Ambassador of Korea, diplomats and prominent civil society members. In his speech, Ambassador of India Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan thanked Beirut Arab University and Elite Center for organizing such event. Ambassador Khan thanked the Lebanese government and Lebanese people for their continuous support and wished Lebanon prosperity. On this occasion Ambassador Khan presented a Shield of Honor to Dr. Ogarit Younan, winner of ‘Jamnalala Bajaj International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India 2022’ and Dr. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Center of Culture for promotion of friendly relations between India and Lebanon. An Indian Cultural and tourism stall was arranged by the Embassy which displayed Incredible India posters. People collected brochures on different Indian States.

 

Wreath Laying Ceremony at Commonwealth War Cemetery in Beirut on 75th Indian Army Day

Embassy of India, Beirut and the Indian Battalion at UNIFIL organized a wreath laying ceremony at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Beirut on the solemn occasion of 75th Indian Army Day. Ambassador of India, Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan and Commanding Officer of the Indian Battalion in UNIFIL, Col. PN Sujay Kumar, Sena Medal, laid wreaths and paid respects to the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the first and second World Wars.

Wreaths were also laid by General Ali Bou Hamdan representing LAF Commander Gen Joseph Aoun, Lt. Col. Balamuguran Ramasubbu representing UNIFIL Force Commander, Mr. Haytham Sayad representing Beirut Governor, Brig Gen Melchor Marin Alvira, Sector East Commander UNIFIL, Ambassador and Defence Attaché of German Embassy, Britain Embassy, Ambassador of Australia, Ambassador of Malaysia, Dr. Imane Kamali representing ADLIR (Association of Development of Lebanese India Relations) Mr Joe Karam, Lawyer , Dr. Ali Al-Masri, President and Founder of the International Economic Lobby on behalf of the Lebanese Civil Society.

Other dignitaries who attended the event included, H.E. Maj Gen MD Jahangir Al Mustahidur Rahman, Ambassador of Bangladesh, Diplomats and Defence Attaches from other embassies like Australia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Brazil, USA, Canada, Philippines, Germany and Turkey also attended the solemn ceremony. Members of the Indian Embassy along with officers and soldiers of the 18 Mahar Infantry Battalion Group serving as Indian Battalion at UNIFIL also graced the occasion.

While addressing the gathering on this occasion Ambassador Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan spoke about the sacrifices and contributions of the Indian Army in the service of the nation as well as for the world as UN Peacekeepers. He highlighted the paramount role played by the Indian Battalion in maintaining peace and security and providing community services in South Lebanon. The event started with all-faith prayers and ended with playing of Last Post by the Indian Battalion Band.

 

Celebration of 74th Republic Day of India

On the glorious occasion of 75 years of India’s Independence being celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) all over India and by all our Missions/Posts abroad, the Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated the 74th Republic Day of India by organizing and participating in the following activities:


A. Illumination of Embassy Buildings:
On this occasion, both Chancery both Chancery and Consular Buildings were illuminated with tri-colour LED lights on the evening of 25th January, 2023. The illumination remained till the evening of Republic Day.

 

B. Flag hoisting ceremony on 74th Republic Day:
The celebration of Republic Day, 2023 was held at the Embassy Premises on 26 January 2023 in the morning at 09:30 AM with full honour, enthusiasm and joy. The programme commenced with the offering of floral tributes by Charge d’ Affaires Mr. Sandeep Grover to Mahatma Gandhi’s bust located in Chancery premises. Thereafter, C d’A unfurled the National Flag and everyone present in the gathering sang the National Anthem in unison. After that, C d’A read out the Address to the Nation by Hon’ble Rashtrapatiji. The programme was attended by about 90 Indian community members, Lebanese friends of India and Embassy Staff along with members of their families. In his address, C d’A also reached out to the Indian community members and reiterated that the Embassy, ‘a home away from their home’, is always available to the Indian community members for addressing their concerns and assisting them in all possible ways. In his concluding remark, C d’A also apprised the gathering about the ongoing Artificial Limb (Jaipur Foot) Fitment Camp organized by the Embassy of India, Beirut in association with Ministry of Public Health of Lebanon at the Rafik Hariri University Hospital, Beirut.

On this occasion, Mr. Deepesh Hoskere, Bharatnatyam Dance Teacher cum performer from ICCR presented famous Hindi patriotic song “Desh Rangila” from the movie Fanaa, which left the gathering mesmerized. A video recording of the Republic Day parade held in the morning of 26 January, 2023 at Kartavya Path was also played in the Chancery Hall for the gathering. All members were offered light Indian snacks and refreshments.


C. INDBATT Medal Day Parade:

On the occasion of 74th Republic Day of India, the Indian battalion of the UNIFIL (United Nation Interim Force for Israel and Lebanon) organized INDBATT Medal Day Parade on 26 January 2023. The ceremony was attended by Shri Ajay Kumar, SS (Cons) from the Embassy of India, Beirut. The attendees included H.E the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Lebanon Mr.Rassul Zhumaly, representative of Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), heads of local authorities and a number of UNIFIL officers. The parade was inspected by the UNIFIL Sector East Commander Brigadier General Melchor Marin Elvira which was followed by awarding of the UN medals to officials of the Indian battalion.


Inauguration of the Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment camp in Beirut

On the occasion of 74th Republic Day of India, The Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment camp was inaugurated on 26th January 2023 at the Rafik Hariri University Hospital, Beirut. This camp is being organized under ‘India for Humanity’ programme and implemented by Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur.

Among the dignitaries, Mr. Majdi Ramadan representing Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Joseph El Helo representing Minister of Public Health, Colonel Nadim Kakoun from Lebanese Armed Forces, Mr. Bassem Ghanem Advisor at the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Jihad Saadeh, Chairman of the Rafik Hariri University Hospital graced the occasion. Members from partner associations, namely, Elite Center of culture and education Tripoli, Dar El Handasah, El Khalil Foundation and Rotary club were present at the inauguration ceremony.

In his welcoming remarks, Shri Sandeep Grover, Charge d’Affairs, stressed the importance India attaches to its long-standing ties with Lebanon and elaborated on India’s humanitarian assistance to various developing countries in their relief and rehabilitation work as part of development partnership. Mr. Joseph El Helo thanked the Indian Government for helping the handicapped persons of Lebanon and lauded the work done by the Indian government. He hoped this collaboration will continue in future. Dr. Jihad Saadeh highlighted the need of such projects in Lebanon and acknowledged the efforts of Jaipur Foot organization and the Government of India. Mrs. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Center commended the fitment camp and described it as a major dimension of India-Lebanon collaboration. On behalf of BMVSS (Jaipur Foot), former Ambassador and Executive President Shri Satish Mehta gave a detailed presentation on the principles and objectives of this camp. Ambassador Mehta offered to train Lebanese technicians in Jaipur Foot technology and provide technical support to help Lebanon set up a permanent center. He thanked the Government of India for its generous help in assisting the handicapped persons in over 40 countries in the past few years.

Senior dignitaries undertook a tour of the workshop and saw the limb-making process and expressed admiration that a perfect-fitting limb could be made in a day. They handed over custom-made artificial limbs to some handicapped persons of Lebanon.

 

Commemoration of 74th Martyr’s Day of Mahatma Gandhi

On the glorious occasion of 75 years of India’s Independence being celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) all over India and by all our Mission/Post abroad, the Embassy of India, Beirut observed the 74th Martyr’s Day. On this occasion, Charge d’ Affaires Mr. Sandeep Grover and the Embassy Team paid floral tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhiji and observed 2 minutes silence. They remembered sacrifices made by Mahatma Gandhiji and numerous others for the freedom of the country. The Embassy also organized a virtual narration of “Mahatma Gandhi’s Quest in the Service of Humanity” by Dr. Shobhana Radhakrishna, internationally renowned speaker on Mahatma Gandhiji, live on Facebook and YouTube Channels of the Embassy.

 

Celebration of Sant Ravidas Jayanti
As part of the ongoing activities of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), the Embassy of India, Beirut joined Gurudwara Sant Ravidas ji for the celebration of birth anniversary of Sant Ravidas ji on February 05, 2023. The event was attended by the India based Officers/Officials of the Embassy. A large number of Indian Diaspora was present on this special occasion. Shri Ramswaroop, President of Gurudwara Sant Ravidas Prabandhak Committee thanked the Embassy members for joining in the celebration. He addressed the gathering and applauded Embassy’s role in helping a large number of members of Indian Diaspora. Shri Sandeep Grover, Charge d’Affaires a.i. congratulated everyone on this occasion and also participated in the cake cutting ceremony. He thanked the Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee for organising the function. He urged the members of the Indian Community to freely reach out to the Embassy for any concerns/support. The grievances pertaining to the Consular Matters of Indian Community were also addressed by Shri Ajay Kumar, SS(Cons) after the formal conclusion of the event.

 

Celebrations of Birth anniversary of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati

On the glorious occasion of 75 years of India’s Independence being celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated the Birth Anniversary of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati on 12th February, 2023 in Chancery premises. A video streaming of the ceremony commemorating of 200th birth anniversary of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi on 12th February, 2023, was organized at the the Chancery Hall.

On this occasion the audience listened to the address of Hon’ble Prime Minister and watched the entire programme with keen interest. The cultural performance during the ceremony, depicting the role played by Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati in eradication of prevalent social evils in India during that time and how he inspired thousands of people around the world for the cause of humanity, was immensely appreciated. All the India based members of the Mission attended the event. The event was publicized on social media platforms of the Mission.

 

Closing ceremony of Artificial Limb (Jaipur Foot) Fitment Camp in Beirut

The Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment camp inaugurated on 26th January 2023 at the Rafik Hariri University Hospital, Beirut came to closure on 15th February 2023. The Camp was organized by the Embassy of India in association with the Ministry of Public Health of Lebanon under ‘India for Humanity’ programme of the Ministry of External Affairs. It was implemented by Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur. In the 4-week long campaign, 322 artificial limbs were provided and fitted to 294 handicapped persons from different regions of Lebanon, surpassing the target of 300 artificial limbs to the beneficiaries.

The month long Camp was visited by a number of Political representatives of Lebanon, United Nations Personnel and other dignitaries from the Lebanese Civil society. Prominent among these are H.E Dr. Youssef El Khalil, Minister of Finance of Lebanon, H.E Dr. Bilal Abdalla, Member of Parliament, H.E Tony Frangieh, Member of Parliament, Mr. Michael Haddad, UNDP Arab States Goodwill Ambassador. From the UNIFIL, Lt Colonel Luis Rivero Camacho, G9 Chief of Sector East and UNIFIL Indian Battalion team led by Lt Colonel Jagmohan Mehra, Deputy Commanding Officer, visited the camp along with patients from their area of operation. Dr. Jaafar Abdul Khalek, President of Rotary Club, Dr. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Center of Culture and Education, Dr. Maamoun Amaneddine, Engineer and Philanthropist also visited the camp and interacted with the beneficiaries.

Upon closure of the camp, Charge d’Affairs Shri Sandeep Grover met Dr. Jihaad Saadeh, Chairman of Rafik Hariri University Hospital and expressed his gratitude to Ministry of Public Health of Lebanon and the Hospital for providing an opportunity to carry out this campaign. Dr. Jihad Saadeh thanked the Government of India and the Jaipur Foot for organizing the camp in these difficult times in Lebanon. They also discussed future avenues of medical cooperation between India and Lebanon.

Screening of Bollywood Movie 'Phillauri'
Embassy of India, Beirut organized in-house screening of the Bollywood Movie ‘Phillauri’ on February 24, 2023 (Friday) in the Chancery Premises as part of ongoing activities under “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations. The movie show was attended by around 30 persons comprising of the Lebanese friends of India, family members of India based officers and local staff members of the Mission. Some notable guests include Mr. Toni Wehbe from National News Agency (NNA), Ms. Tara Maalouf, Opera Singer and Mr. Camil Mrad, from Book Club. The movie was well appreciated by all and was followed by refreshments. The event was publicized on all the social media platforms of the Mission.

 

Meeting with Gems and Jewellery importers

As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Celebrations, the Embassy organized a Business Meet with Gems and Jewellery importers at the Embassy on March 9, 2023. The meeting was attended by Ms. Suzanne Eid, Coordinator of Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council and top G&J importers in Lebanon. Ms. Eid along with other business persons travels to India every year to participate in business seminars organised by GJEPC.

Cd’A Mr. Sandeep Grover along with Commercial Officers interacted and discussed the ways to enhance G&J export from India. In his remarks, Cd’A gave an overview of the Gems and Jewellery sector in India to the attendees and also informed them about India’s potential in Gems and Jewellery sector being the largest diamond cutting and polishing center in the world.

 

Celebration of HOLI Festival

“Holi Milan Samaroh” was organized by the Embassy of India, Beirut under the theme of UNITY, on 11th March, 2023 in the Embassy Premises with full fervour and zeal. The event was attended by prominent members of Indian Community along with the Embassy staff and their familiy members. Charges d’Affairs Shri Sandeep Grover greeted all guests and wished them happy and healthy Holi. Everyone including children put herbal colouful gulal on each other. The day was full of fun and dances. Indian food was served. Participants also enjoyed Indian Sweets on this festive occasion.

 

Meeting with Textile Importers

As part of export promotion activities, the Embassy organised an interaction with textiles importers in Lebanon on March 15, 2023 at the Chancery premises. These importers have been sponsored by Wool & Wollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) for participation in India Fashion Tex 2023 RBSM jointly organised by the WWEPC and Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) with the support of Ministry of Textiles and Department of Commerce, Government to India. During the meeting Cd’A Shri Sandeep Grover briefed the delegation about the potential of Textile and Fashion industry in India discussed various ways to enhance Indian exports to Lebanon. Subsequently the delegation participated in India Fashion Tex 2023 during 21-23 March, 2023 and had B2B meetings.

 

Dance event “The Mirror of Gestures”

Embassy of India, Beirut in association with ‘Tiro Association for Arts’ and ‘Dreamers Japan’ in Lebanon presented a series of performances titled “The Mirror of Gestures” incorporating Indian and Japanese dance forms, on 17th March, 2023 at Rivoli Cinema Auditorium in Tyre, South Lebanon.

The theme of the event was to showcase different cultures together. The artists from the Embassy inaugurated the show with traditional Bharatanatyam dance performances, slowly moving towards the innovative approach of presenting famous Lebanese numbers in Indian classical dance style. It was followed by a Bollywood dance presentation by a group of Lebanese girls from TIRO. The Indian dance performance was choreographed by Mr. Deepesh Hoskere, Embassy’s dance teacher. The troupe Dreamers Japan, headed by Ms. Eiko Minami, presented Japanese traditional dances including a fan dance, and katana sword dance in their kimono attire.

The event was attended Ms. Lina Varella, Cd’A of Colombian Embassy, Mr. Mahmoud Al Mallah, member of Municipality of Tyre, Mr. Salah Atwi, a famous Film Director, Ms. Bane Khalife, Rest House Tyre, Mrs Imane Jaffal, Rotary Club of Tyre. The UNIFIL Peacekeepers from Republic of Korea and Ghana also attended the event. The performances were well appreciated and applauded by a gathering of more than 250 people.

Cd’A Mr. Sandeep Grover graced the occasion, met all the performing artists, and distributed gifts to all performers on behalf of the Indian Embassy. He thanked the representatives of Tyre Municipality and Tiro Association of Arts and others for their support in organizing the event.

 

International Dance Day Festival Lebanon (IDDFL)

Embassy of India collaborated with the Lebanese American University (LAU) and Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, for the week-long "International Dance Day Festival Lebanon” (IDDFL), at LAU Campus in Beirut and Byblos from 27th March to 1st April, 2023. The festival introduced students to renowned dance instructors from different countries.

The “Gala Event”, on the theme “This way forward”, was organized on 31st March 2023 at Gulbenkian Amphitheatre, at LAU, Beirut Campus with the dance instructors and students showcasing their performances incorporating different dance styles. The Embassy team led by ICCR Teacher Cum Performer Mr. Deepesh Hoskere, presented a Bharatanatyam dance followed by a Bollywood dance as a part of the event. The event was attended by more than 250 people.

The guests included Vice President LAU Dr. Elise Salem, Dean Dr. Cathia Jenainati, Chairperson Dr. Vahid Bahmardi, Founder of the Lebanese School of Ballet Madame Georgette Gebara, UNESCO Lebanese National Commission Coordinator Ms. Christiane Jeitani, Head of Cultural Section MoFA Mr. Raed El Khadem, Advisor to the Minister of Culture Mrs. Bouchra Baghdadi-Adra, LAU Music Professor Dr. Michele El Chemaly, President of Elite Center Dr. Imane Kamali, LAU students, members of the Indian Community. Officials of the Indian Embassy along with their families also attended the event. Cd’A Mr. Sandeep Grover met and congratulated the Embassy team for their enthralling performance. The festival culminated on 1st of April with a “Community Day Event” at LAU Byblos, where all instructors gave free workshops on different dance forms. This week-long festival was directed by Dr. Nadra Majeed Assaf, Associate Professor of Dance, Coordinator-Visual and Performing Arts, at Lebanese American University.

 

Celebration of Birth Anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar at Embassy premises
The garlanding of the portrait of Baba Saheb Ambedkar was done by Charge d’Affaires Shri Sandeep Grover on April 14, 2023. Prominent members of Indian community also paid their floral tributes to Baba Saheb. A ‘Photo Exhibition’ on the illustrious life of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, was also inaugurated on this occasion. The exhibition was widely appreciated by the visitors as it helped in enriching their awareness about Baba Saheb. A documentary “Mooknayak- Leader of the Silent” based on the life, ideas & ideals of Baba Saheb was screened at the Embassy.

Celebration of Birth Anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar at Sant Ravidas Gurudwara
Sh. Sandeep Grover, Charge d’Affaires visited the Sant Ravidas Gurudwara, Beirut and paid floral tributes to the statue of Dr. Ambedkar followed by India based officers of the Embassy. A special prayer was also performed in the fond memory of Baba Saheb by an eminent member of the Gurudwara joined by all Indian Community members present there. Charge d’Affaires addressed the gathering and thanked the members of the Gurudwara management for organizing the event.

 

Celebration of Baisakhi, 2023
The Embassy of India, Beirut celebrated Baisakhi Festival with Indian Community Members at Nahr-El-Ibrahim Gurudwara on 16th April, 2023. Shri Sandeep Grover, Charge d’Affaires addressed the gathering at Nahr-E-Ibrahim Gurudwara and greeted everyone for the Baisakhi Festival. The event was attended by more than 200 Indian community members. India based officers and officials along with their families also joined this event with full enthusiasm and joy.

 

Live-streaming of 100th Episode of Mann Ki Baat
Embassy of India, Beirut organised livestreaming of Radio Programme of Hon’ble Prime Minister ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on April 30, 2023. Cd’A Shri Sandeep Grover, Embassy officials and prominent members of Indian Community attended the event.

 

Meeting with President of Balamand University
Cd’A Shri Sandeep Grover along with Embassy officers met with Dr. Elias L. Warrak, President of the Balamand University at his office in Al Koura Campus, North Lebanon on 9th May, 2023 to discuss matters of mutual concerns. On this occasion a total of 43 books on India covering different subjects were gifted by the Mission for the library of the University in a brief ceremony. The official handing over ceremony took place in the presence of university professors, library staff and university students.

 

Tourism Seminar ‘Incredible Gujarat’
The Mission organised Tourism Seminar ‘Incredible Gujarat’ in association with Association of Travel and Touristic Agents in Lebanon (ATTAL) with the support of Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL) on May 12, 2023 at the office of ATTAL. Around 15 tour operators from Lebanon attended the seminar and around 10 joined virtually from India.

 

Dance event ‘Nritya Katha-Storytelling through Dance’
Embassy of India, Beirut organized an event titled ‘Nritya Katha-Storytelling through Dance’ on May 20th, 2023 at Saint Maroun School, Tripoli in association with Elite Center of Culture & Education, Tripoli.

Open Air Yoga Session at Rest House Tyre Hotel & Resort, Tyre, South Lebanon

The Embassy of India, Beirut organized the first event at Tyre beach to celebrate 09th International Day Yoga on June 10, 2023 in collaboration with Rest House Tyre Hotel & Resort, Tyre, South Lebanon. Yoga sessions conducted by Mr Sreekumar and Ms. Rola Ghaddar, renowned Yoga Teachers in Lebanon were attended by more than 100 yoga enthusiasts including representatives from Italian Embassy, Canadian Embassy and a number of local Lebanese participants and UNIFIL Officers. The event concluded with the distribution of brass shields of appreciation to the Rest House Tyre Team and the yoga teachers. Yoga T-shirts were also distributed. Light refreshments were served to the participants by the Rest House Tyre. An event Sea Whispers was also organized where everyone prayed to the Almighty God for their wishes to come true.

 

Open Air Yoga Session at Plage Des Rois Hotel & Resort, Byblos

As part of the celebrations of 9th International Day of Yoga, the Mission organized the second yoga event on June 16, 2023 at Plage Des Rois Hotel & Resort, Byblos, Lebanon. The event was hosted at the green lawn adjacent to the beautiful Mediterranean sea beach inside the Plage Des Rois hotel. Charge d’Affaires Sh. Sandeep Grover addressed all yoga enthusiasts of the city of Byblos, emphasizing the importance of practicing yoga and its health benefits. Yoga sessions were led by Ms. Samantha Howick of One Yoga Samantha, Ms. Nisrine Khoury, Byblos Centre for Yoga and Arts, Ms Olga Pavlova, Ms. Reine Hashem, Ms. Brigitte Hajj Chahine renowned Yoga Teachers in Lebanon. The Yoga Event was attended by more than 120 yoga enthusiasts including members of Indian diaspora, Embassy officers along with their family members. Ms. Emily Bouchrouche, Office incharge of Maison du Tourisme, Byblos and Dr. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Centre of Education and Culture, Tripoli also participated in the event. The event concluded with the distribution of brass shields to the hotel Plage des Rois, all five yoga teacher and Ms. Emily of Tourism office incharge of Byblos. Light refreshments were served to the participants after the conclusion of Yoga sessions.

 

Yoga Session at Indian Battalion (INDBATT), UNIFIL

The Embassy of India, Beirut in association with Indian Battalion (INDBATT), UNIFIL, South Lebanon organized Yoga event on June 21, 2023 at the parade ground of Indian Battalion Base with background of scenic beauty of Harmon mountain range bordering Lebanon-Syria. Charge d’Affaires Sh. Sandeep Grover addressed the gathering and thanked Col. B.S. Gusanin, CONTICO, Indian Battalion UNIFIL for organizing the event. He applauded the efforts of Indian Battalion in promoting Yoga in Lebanon. Yoga sessions conducted by Ms. Donia Najjar, Yoga Expert from Sreedevi Daya Yoga, Lebanon were attended by more than 200 yoga enthusiasts including Mr. Kasim Qadari, Mayor of Kafir Shuba, people from UNIFIL area in South Lebanon and peacekeepers from Indian and other Battalions of UNIFIL. The session concluded with the presentation of Plaque of Appreciation by Col. Gusain to Ms. Donia Najjar, Yoga Expert. Copies of Yoga booklet containing common yoga protocol for IDY 2023 issued by Ministry of AYUSH were also distributed among yoga lovers.

 

UNIFIL Headquarters, Naquora, South Lebanon:

A yoga event was hosted at the Headquarters of UNIFIL at Naquora near Mediterranean sea beach on 21st June, 2023 in celebration of the 9th International Day of Yoga. Sh. Ajay Kumar, Second Secretary (Cons. & Com) and Sh. Samir K. Khawas, Assistant Consular Officer from Embassy of India, Beirut participated in the yoga sessions conducted by Cpl Raghuwaar Singh from Indian Army. Brig. Chok Bahadur Dhakal, UNIFIL Deputy Force Commander, was the chief guest at the event. The Yoga Event was attended by more than 100 peacekeepers from countries like Ghana, Nepal etc. including Indian Army Personnel deployed at the UNIFIL Headquarters. Copies of Yoga booklet containing common yoga protocol for IDY 2023 issued by Ministry of AYUSH were also distributed among yoga lovers.

 

Open Air Yoga Session at Coral Beach Hotel & Resort, Beirut:

The Embassy of India, Beirut has organized a fifth Open Air Yoga event of International Day Yoga on June 22, 2023 at Coral Beach Hotel & Resort, Beirut, on the Mediterranean sea beach. Charge d’Affaires Sh. Sandeep Grover addressed all yoga enthusiasts and informed them about Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi leading the Yoga session at UN Headquarters in New York on the International Day of Yoga. Open air yoga sessions incorporating breathing, meditation and physical exercises were conducted by Mr. George and Ms. Dana Chamseddine from Art of Living, Ms. Donia Najjar from Sreedevi Daya Yoga, Ms. Hala Okeili from Sarvam Yoga and Ms. Dunia Atmeh, from ISHA Foundation. The Yoga Event was attended by more than 120 yoga enthusiasts including members of Indian diaspora, Embassy officers with families. Ms. Norma Abi Karam, First Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon, represented HE Dr. Abdallah Bou Habib, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon, at the event. The event concluded with distribution of brass shields to all yoga teachers followed by serving of light refreshments to the participants.

 

Open Air Yoga Session at Naji Beach, Tripoli

The Mission in association with the Elite Centre for Culture & Education organized sixth and last Yoga event on 23rd June, 2023 at Naji Beach Resort, Tripoli, the 2nd largest city in Lebanon. Dr. Imane Kamali, President of Elite Center of Culture and Education spoke about how yoga was useful in our daily life to counter stressful time during corona pandemic and thanked Indian Embassy for organizing of the event for third consecutive year at Tripoli. Yoga sessions conducted by Mr. George Hanna from Art of Living, Ms. Imane El Sheikh, Ms. Fida Haffer and Ms. Reina Hallab were attended by almost 100 yoga enthusiasts including local dignitaries. The event concluded with the presentation of Shields of appreciation to all yoga instructors and serving of light refreshments.

 

Dance event “Rhythm in Motion” at Notre Dam University (NDU)

Embassy of India in Lebanon, in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities at Notre Dame University(NDU), Louize Campus organized a dance event “Rhythm in Motion” at Bechara Al Rahi Theatre, NDU, Louaize, on 27th June 2023. The one-hour dance show consisted of a series of thirteen performances including Indian classical Bharatanatyam, Bollywood, classical fusion, Bachata, Indian-African fusion, Japanese Fusion, and Dabke dance styles. The show was presented by a team of 16 members, including the choreographers, Mr. Deepesh Hoskere, ICCR Teacher at the Embassy of India, and Ms. Yelena Saad, Dance instructor, NDU. More than 200 guests including Vice President for University Advancement at NDU, Deans and faculty members of NDU and media personalities attended the event. This intercultural and collaborative show was well-received and appreciated by the audience. Refreshment and juices, tea and coffee were also served to  guests.

 

Sri Lanka Ambassador Trophy Cricket Tournament

Embassy of India, Beirut participated in the cricket tournament named ‘Sri Lanka Ambassador Trophy-2023’ on 23rd July, 2023 at the grounds of St. Joseph Church, Achrafieh, Beirut organized by Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beirut. Teams from the Embassies of Australia, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India participated in the tournament and played friendly match against each other. Indian Embassy team led by Mr. Hemant Gautam, SS(Pol) played the first match of the tournament with Pakistan Embassy team.

 

Commemoration of Quit India Movement

Embassy of India, Beirut screened the virtual narration of the historic Quit India Movement by Dr. Shobhana Radhakrishna, an internationally acclaimed speaker on Mahatma Gandhi on 9th August 2023 from 1100 hours. Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh along with all India based and local staff members of the Mission attended and watched the virtual narration.

Photo Exhibition on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Embassy of India, Beirut organized a photo exhibition at the Ground Floor of Chancery to observe “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” on 14th  August, 2023. Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh inaugurated the photo exhibition and spoke about the plight of the people who had to face horrific situation on account of migration during that period. The exhibition remained open till evening of 16th August, 2023 for visitors. More than 100 visitors came to see the photo exhibition.

Illumination of Embassy Buildings

As a part of celebration of 77th Independence Day Celebration, the Embassy buildings were illuminated with tricolor lighting from 14th August, 2023. Both Chancery and Consular Buildings were illuminated with tri-colour LED piped lights. The illumination remained till the evening of 16th August, 2023.

Flag Hoisting Ceremony on 77th Independence Day

Flag hoisting ceremony on the occasion of 77th Independence Day of India was held at the Embassy Premises on 15 August 2023 in the morning at 09:00 AM with full honour, enthusiasm and fervour. Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh offered floral tributes to Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi and then hoisted the National Flag. Thereafter, Ambassador read out the Address to the Nation by Hon’ble Rashtrapatiji and requested the gathering to watch the ongoing exhibition in Chancery Hall on observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Panch Pran pledge for making India a developed country by 2047 was also administered by the Ambassador to the gathering. Patriotic songs sung by the Embassy staff were hugely appreciated by the audience. A  plaque of appreciation was presented to Ms. Imane El Shiekh, Yoga Teacher for winning the Yoga My Pride Photography Contest held during International Day of Yoga this year. The ceremony was attended by more than 150 Indian community members, members of the Indian Battalion, Lebanese friends of India and Embassy staff with their children and family members.

Har Ghar Tiranga campaign

Indian community members and Embassy staff participated enthusiastically in Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. All the Embassy officers and staff flew the Indian flag, with their families, at their homes. Indian community members also joined this campaign from 13-15th August, 2023. Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) of flag code for hoisting flag was also shared on social media of the Mission for wider publicity.

 

Meri Maati Mera Desh campaign

Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh called upon all Indian community members and Embassy staff members to join the Meri Maati Mera Desh campaign from 13 to 15th August, 2023. All the Embassy officers and staff took selfies with earthen diya at their homes and were uploaded on the website www.merimaatimeradesh.gov.in. e-certificate generated were also shared on the social media account of the Mission.

 

Independence Day Reception at Phoenicia Hotel, Beirut

The Embassy of India, Beirut organized National Day Reception on 16th August, 2023 Phoenicia Hotel to celebrate of 77th Independence Day of India. Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh warmly welcomed the guests and spoke about India’s G20 and SCO Presidency, Global Welfare, Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), International Solar Alliance (ISA) and also mentioned about India’s engagement with Lebanon in various sectors for greater progress and prosperity of the people of the two countries. This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony and Bharatanatyam performance by the Embassy Dance Teacher and a presentation of dance and song sequences by the peacekeepers of India Battalion in UNIFIL. More than 200 guests including MP Mr. Ali Oseiran, Deputy PM H.E. Mr. Saadeh Al Shami representing HE PM Najib Mikati, Minister of Public Health H.E. Dr Firas Abiad, Minister of Energy H.E. Mr. Walid Fayad, MP Tony Frenjieh, Force Commander of UNIFIL Maj. Gen. Aroldo Lazaro Saenz, a number of Ambassadors and CDA’s from the Embassies of various countries, representatives of UN organizations and eminent civil society members attended the event.

Report on celebration of National Sports Day 2023

Embassy of India, Beirut organized Badminton and Table Tennis Tournament on the occasion of ‘National Sports Day’ on 25th August, 2023 in the Embassy premises. Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh addressed the gathering and conveyed that India celebrates National Sports Day for commemorating birth anniversary of legend Hockey player Major Dhyanchand. He further encouraged everyone to participate in any sports activity on daily basis to foster physical and mental wellness. Further, he administered “Fit India Pledge” to all participants including local staff members, India based staff and their family members and Indian Diaspora members. Lebanese players from M/s Makhzoumi Foundation also participated in the Table Tennis tournament.
